Josh Breske was named Head Coach of the Black Hills State University football program in December 2019, becoming the 29th head coach in program history. He has compiled a record of 17-18 (.486) leading the BHSU football program, incluing back-to-back winning seasons.
The 2023 season saw Breske and the Yellow Jackets put together the best finish in the RMAC in the program's Division II era with a 5-4 record and a tied-for-fourth finish in the league standings. It marked the second-straight season BH posted a winning season under Breske.Â
Â
Over his first three seasons leading the Yellow Jackets, Coach Breske and the team have improved each year and brought winning back to the program. The team finished 7-4 in 2022 for its first winning season since 2016, after seeing the team go 4-7 in 2021 and 0-2 in an unprecedented COVID-19 shortened 2020.
Along with winning teams, Breske has also helped produce winning student-athletes, overseeing the 2021 team who won the RMAC Brechler Award for having the best team GPA in the conference, and coaching the 2022 RMAC Defensive Academic Player of the Year in Ryder Blair.
Â
The Breske name should be familiar to Yellow Jacket fans. From 2005-09 he was a standout member of the BHSU offensive line, starting all four years, and garnering three DAC All-Conference awards and two NAIA All-American honors. The two-time captain led his team to two DAC championships and two NAIA playoff appearances.
Breske returns to BHSU after serving for three years as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Lindenwood University. He capped his three-year stint with the Lions with a second round NCAA DII playoff berth and a 9-4 record in his final year.
Prior to Lindenwood, Breske was at the University of Sioux Falls, serving as Tight Ends Coach in 2014 and 2015 before transitioning to Offensive Line Coach in 2016. The Cougars were 32-5 while Breske was with the program and saw the team finish 12-1 in his final year in which they made a second round appearance in the DII NCAA playoffs.
Breske got his coaching start as a student assistant for the Yellow Jackets in 2010 working with the offensive line. He then worked as a graduate assistant at Robert Morris University for the 2011 season before later finishing his master’s degree at Chadron State College while working as a GA from 2012-2013.
Breske received a B.S. in Business Administration from BHSU in 2010 and a master’s in Business Administration from Chadron State College in 2013. He and his wife, Alana Breske (Dykhouse), have two children, Lola and Bo.
