Scott Walkinshaw enters his 22nd and final year at Black Hills State in 2019. Coach Walkinsahw has been the head cross country coach for all 22 years while previously the head coach of the track & field teams. He now serves as the assistant coach for track & field, leading the distance runners.
Both the men's and women's teams made it to the NCAA Division II National Championships in 2018, marking the first time since BHSU joined the NCAA that both teams qualified. The men's team finished 16th as a team, led by All-American Jonah Theisen, who was 14th overall. The Yellow Jacket women took 17th place, with Nicole Allerdings finishing 32nd to garner All-American honors. Jonah Theisen was honored following the season as an Academic All-American.
The Yellow Jacket program has become nationally recognized as one of the top teams in the nation under his guidance, proving this through numerous top-five finishes in NAIA and leading the Green and Gold to a 14th place finish at the 2015 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship.
The 2015 season was of historic significance as the Yellow Jackets won four meets, including the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational that was won by All-American Alec Baldwin. After placing sixth at the RMAC Championships, the Green and Gold went to the South Central Region Championship and placed sixth again to claim a spot in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship. Entering the meet with a No. 22 national ranking, Black Hills State ran its way to a 14th place finish behind a ninth place All-American finish by Alec Baldwin.
In 2014, Walkinshaw coached Alec Baldwin into the national meet becoming the second-ever qualifier in the NCAA-era at the meet, following the footsteps of Mitch Kraft at the 2013 competition.
Prior to the NCAA, Walkinshaw built a powerhouse in the NAIA, including a fourth-place finish at the NAIA Combined National Championships in 2010, a third place finish in the combined championship in 2005 and 2006, a fifth place finish in 2003 and a runner-up combined finish in 200.
Walkinshaw guided the Yellow Jackets to 12 Dakota Athletic Conference Championships while helping 32 runners earn NAIA Cross Country All-American honors. Walkinshaw also coached Lisa Bomengen, who was selected as the 1999-2000 South Dakota Sports Writers College Female Athlete of the Year.
Coach Walkinshaw has been chosen to be a guest speaker at many different events some of which include: Wyoming Coaches Association Annual Meeting, South Dakota High School Activities Association and a guest clinician at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships. He is also the director of the Black Hills Distance Running camp.
Before his legendary tenure at Black Hills State, Walkinshaw coached at Odessa College and Garden City Community College. He also coached high school cross country in Utah for eight years where he was named the 1983 Utah Cross Country Coach of the Year.
