Football Falls In Season Opener

Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team squared-off against Grand View University in Spearfish, S.D. and fell 48-14 to open the 2011 season.

The Yellow Jackets struggled early with three turnovers in the first half.  Grand View was able to capitalize on all three turnovers and build a 21-0 lead that they added to throughout the game.

"You can't start a game with three turnovers and expect to win," said head coach Jay Long.  "We have to win the turnover battle in order to win the game.  We need to be able to ride the highs and when the lows come we need to be able to get out of them.  Our biggest thing is we need to become more consistent."

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by sophomore quarterback Wes Kragt, making his first career start at the position.  Kragt was 10-of-19 with one interception and tallied a total of 120 yards through the air and two touchdowns.  Kragt also added 30 rushing yards on 11 attempts for the Yellow Jackets.

"We showed some sparks and showed that we can do some things," said Kragt of the team's performance.  "We just have to put it all together.  We have one game under our belt and now it is time to go get a win next week."

Black Hills State will return to action Saturday, September 3 as the team takes on Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisc.  Kickoff is set for 12 noon MT.  The game will be broadcast live locally on 980 AM KDSJ.
