Football Defeats Rival S.D. School Of Mines

Rapid City, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team knocked-off S.D. School of Mines 37-21 on Saturday night in Rapid City, S.D.

The Yellow Jackets were able to get their ground game going behind Trent Butler.  Butler racked up 146 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown.  Black Hills State ran for 281 yards as a team.

"I really have to give a lot of credit to the offensive line," said Butler.  "They opened up some great holes for me to run through tonight."

The Yellow Jackets struck first in the game on a 4-yard run after Joey Brown returned an interception 61 yards.  The Hardrockers would answer and tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.  The second quarter would see Wes Kragt score on a 1-yard touchdown run and give the Yellow Jackets a 14-7 lead at the half.

The second half would begin with Black Hills State scoring on a pass from Kragt to Reed Reuman making the score 21-7.  S.D. School of Mines would answer with two field goals by Andy Smith and a Dustin Menely run.  The Hardrockers would convert on the two-point conversion and tie the game at 21-21 in the fourth quarter.  Black Hills State would score on another pass from Kragt to Ryan Fagerstrom.  The point after attempt would be blocked.  Devin Rounds would make a 31-yard field goal and Butler would run in another touchdown giving the Yellow Jackets a 37-21 victory.

Black Hills State forced four turnovers in the contest including two interceptions by Brown.

Black Hills State will travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on the University of North Dakota on Sept. 24 next.  The game is set for 6 p.m. CT and can be heard locally on 980 AM KDSJ.
