BHSU Falls to Jackrabbits in Exhibition Opener

Brookings, S.D. – The Black Hills State women's basketball team lost to Division I opponent South Dakota State 48-90 in its opening exhibition game of the 2012-13 season.

The Yellow Jackets stayed with South Dakota State in the early minutes with two back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Chelsey Biegler. The Jackrabbits quickly took control of the half and outscored the Yellow Jackets 23-42. BHSU shot an impressive 4-of-8 behind the arc in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets continued to have a tough time cracking the South Dakota defense in the second half, but were able to force 14 Jackrabbit turnovers.

Biegler matched SDSU's Ashley Eide with a game-high 16 points, making 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Sophomore Logan Cowan added 14 points on an efficient 7-of-11 from the field (63.6 percent) before fouling out.

The Yellow Jackets finished 6-of-17 from 3-point range. At the stripe, BHSU made 8-of-10 attempts.

Sophomore Dakota Barrie led the Yellow Jackets on the boards with seven.

The Jackrabbits had four players in double-digits scoring, including Eide (16), Megan Waytashek (15), Gabby Boever (14) and Tara Heiser (12).

"It was great to play against a team of that caliber," said head coach Mark Nore. "We have the tools, we just have a long way to go. Our gals will continue to work hard."

The Yellow Jackets will head to Dickinson State on Saturday to conclude exhibition play. The regular season will tip-off on Nov. 10 against Montana State University – Billings at the Donald E. Young Center.
