Aberdeen, S.D. – The Black Hills State women's basketball team lost two games over the weekend at Northern State University in Aberdeen.
On Friday, the Jackets fell to Minnesota State University, Mankato by a score of 91-60, despite having three players in double figures. The Jackets were led by Calli Bechtel with 13 points. Bechtel also recorded three assists and shot 67 percent from the field. Sophomores Bailey Kusser and Chelsey Biegler scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Jackets played aggressively during their second contest of the season, getting to the free throw line 33 times. Head coach Mark Nore pointed to turnovers as a major detriment on Friday.
"We need to value the ball a lot better," said Nore. "MSU is a really good team. We won't have much success with a team of that caliber if we turn the ball over and give them possessions."
On Saturday, the Jackets played a tough Northern State Wolves team. Black Hills State trailed by 12 points going into halftime and was not able to close that gap in the second half. The final score was 64-47 in favor of Northern State.
Kusser led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points, Biegler added eight, and sophomore guard Dakota Barrie recorded seven points, five rebounds, and five assists for Black Hills State. The Wolves out-rebounded the Jackets by 28 during the game.
The Yellow Jackets return home to play in-state rival South Dakota Mines on Tuesday at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm, with the men's game to follow at 7:30pm.
