GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The nation's fifth-ranked team, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, were back at it versus the Yellow Jackets on Saturday night as they used a 20-point halftime lead to carry them to their sixth consecutive win to begin the year with an 81-52 victory.
While the Jackets improved in the second half to score 30 points to CMU's 39, it was the play of the Mavericks' Sharaya Selsor and Taylor Rock who combined for 42 points to help their team to win by a margin of 29 points. Selsor finished with 22 points that included going 8-for-8 from the free throw line while Rock made 6-of-7 three-pointers and had eight assist, three rebounds, and three assists.Â
CMU was two points shy of having all five of their starters score in double figures as Aubry Boehme had 11 points, Hannah Pollart had 10, and Christen Lopez finished with eight points. CMU had just 10 bench points on the night.Â
The Yellow Jackets were once again led by athletic junior guard, Chelsey Biegler, who finished 4-of-8 from the field and 12 points as she had four made free throws to go with three rebounds and three steals.Â
The only other player to score in double figures for the Jackets was Cassidy Kotelman who had 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with three boards, one assist and one steal. Junior Dakota Barrie led the team with five rebounds as she also finished with three assists and two steals along with dropping in six points.Â
Freshman Taylor Trohkimoinen got her first start of her career at BHSU and finished with five points on 2-of-5 shooting with two rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Senior Calli Bechtel and redshirt freshman Courtney Patterson combined for 10 points as Logan Cowan entered the game to add six more off the bench. As a team, the Jackets had 14 bench points.Â
CMU had an effective shooting night as they shot 50-percent as a team (27-of-54 FG) and an impressive 10-of-20 from beyond the arch on three-pointers. They also went 17-of-20 from the free throw line to help extend their lead in the first half.  Â
The Yellow Jackets shot almost 36-percent as a team as they hit 20-of-56 shots and for the second straight game, just three 3-point shots. CMU out rebounded BHSU 39 to 30 as CMU had 14 steals as both teams turned the ball over 19 times.Â
The next game for the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 0-2 RMAC) will come back at the Young Center next Saturday night, 12/14, versus Colorado Christian at 4 p.m.Â
