Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jackets come up short at No. 7 CMU

Spearfish, S.D. - The Black Hills State women's basketball team (7-13, 6-10 RMAC) traveled to No. 7 ranked-nationally Colorado Mesa University (19-1, 15-1 RMAC) on Friday night and came up short 82-55.

The Yellow Jackets were one-point away from having four players in double-figures scoring with sophomore forward, Logan Cowan (6-0 Highmore, SD), leading the way with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and two assists.  However, it was CMU's Katrina Selsor, who led the way from the opening tip on her way to a double-double with 31 points on 10-of-13 shooting and ten rebounds and two assists.

Selsor had almost half of her teams point total at halftime, ending the first 20-minutes with 20 points while CMU had 44 points in the first half.  BHSU was within striking distance at the break down by 12 and putting up 32 points in the half.  The second half involved more defense on both ends where BHSU was limited to 23 second half points, while CMU had 38.  On the night, the Yellow Jackets shot a solid 47-percent from the field including 7-of-9 from the free throw line.  The three-point line was not kind tonight to BHSU as they went 4-of-15 from the behind the arch.

It seemed as if it were just one of those nights where CMU hit over half their shots and got to the free throw line 20 more times then the Yellow Jackets.  CMU shot 53-percent on the night while hitting eight three-point shots and were 22-of-29 on free throws.

The Yellow Jackets took a hit on the glass as they lost the rebound battle 32-19, which led to many second chance points for the Mavericks.

What was encouraging on the night as they continue in their second season competing on the Division II level was the point production of many young players.  Along with Cowan's point production, junior forward Calli Bechtel (6-1 Rapid City, SD) finished the night with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and sophomore guard, Chelsey Biegler (5-10 Rapid City, SD), who is averaging just over 16 points per game, finished the night with ten points on 4-of-8 shooting and did have two steals.  Another sophomore scorer was Bailey Kusser (5-9 Highmore, SD) who had nine points off the bench, who was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Yellow Jackets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at 5:30 versus the Western State Mountaineers (2-18, 2-14 RMAC).
