Anderson Accounts for 476 Yards in Loss to Colorado Mesa

SPEARFISH, S.D. -  Another career day for Ward Anderson was not enough for the Black Hills State University football team as the Yellow Jackets fell 48 -31 to Colorado Mesa University on Saturday afternoon in Lyle Hare Stadium.

Anderson became the first Yellow Jacket to rush for more than 100 yards since the 2012 season as he ran for a career-high 143 yards on 10 attempts, with two touchdowns, and passed for another 333 with two touchdowns.

Anderson's first touchdown came on a 47-yard run up the middle, bringing the Yellow Jackets back within seven points at 14-7 with 5:34 remaining in the first half.

The Green and Gold made it a one-point game as Anderson found Jerome Krysl for an 11-yard touchdown reception, capping a seven-play 71-yard drive. The PAT was blocked, making the score 14-13 with 1:26 remaining.

Colorado Mesa answered immediately with a four-play 51 yard drive just 31 seconds later as Andrew Cota found Daniel Perse for a 27-yard touchdown reception to enter the intermission with a 21-13 Mavericks lead.

CMU opened a 28-13 lead after Cota found Ian Juede for a 21-yard touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets began to counter as Anderson threw a quick pass to Luke Whalen, who was wide open in the secondary for a 67-yard touchdown. Whalen jogged into the end zone untouched. A two-point conversion brought the score to 28-21 with 12:29 remaining in the third quarter.

Colorado Mesa answered back with 6:27 remaining, this time a five-yard pass from Cota to Blaine Jackson.

On the ensuing Yellow Jacket possession, Anderson utilized the same exact play that he scored his 47-yard run on, except this time it was a 65-yard run into the end zone.

As time began to tick away, the Yellow Jackets were only able to get a 30-yard field goal from Diego Carstens as CMU prevailed to the 48-31 victory.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Western State Colorado University for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
