FB: Yellow Jackets Fall at Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University football team fell 48-7 to Colorado Mesa University Saturday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colorado.

One of the nation's most stout defenses held the Yellow Jackets to 355 yards of offense while CMU tallied 624 yards of offense.

The Yellow Jackets (0-5, 0-3 RMAC) got on the scoreboard first when Phydell Paris capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with his fourth rushing touchdown on the year. Paris evaded the Maverick defense from eight yards out for the 7-0 lead with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Colorado Mesa (4-1,  then knotted the game up at 7-7 when DJ Hubbard took a 23-yard carry into the end zone with 12:16 left in the second quarter. The Mavericks continued the first half with two more touchdowns and a field goal to enter the intermission with a 24-7 lead.

The second half was a stout defensive effort for one of the nation's top defensive teams as the Green and Gold couldn't get on the scoreboard. Colorado Mesa tallied three more touchdowns enroute to the 48-7 victory.

Freshman quarterback Ryan Hommel completed 24-of-44 passes for 254 yards. Trey Flemming received four of those passes for a team-high 94 yards. On the ground, Paris had 46 yards and the touchdown.

Defensively, Lane Lawson tallied eight tackles for the Yellow Jackets while Damon Goldhammer had four tackles including a sack and a tackle for a loss.

Sean Rubalcaba completed 18-of-28 passes for the Mavericks for 343 yards and three touchdowns while Hubbard led the ground attack with 125 yards and a touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets return to Lyle Hare Stadium on Saturday for the annual Swarm Days game against Western State Colorado University. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. with tailgate at 11 a.m.
