WBB: Yellow Jackets Storm Past Lady Lions

SPEARFISH, S.D.—The Lady Lions from Trinity Bible College paid a visit to the Young Center Friday evening to face the Black Hills State University women's basketball team. BHSU's contest with the Lady Lions is a tune-up before embarking on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition for the remainder of the season.

The Lady Lions, an National Christian College Athletic Association member, won three of their last four games and were looking to play spoiler against an NCAA Division II opponent. That wasn't the case as BHSU came up on top 105-28.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-1, 1-0 RMAC while Trinity Bible College falls to 6-6.

The Yellow Jackets took advantage of three Lady Lion turnovers from the get-go, which propelled them to a 10-2 lead with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter.

Sarali Peterson cut BHSU lead to five points with a three-pointer to make the score 10-5 at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter, but the Lady Lions wouldn't inch closer. The green and gold jumped to a 27-4 run en route to a 37-9 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Yellow Jackets widen the margin further. BHSU outscored the Lady Lions 15-2 in the second quarter to take a 52-11 halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets didn't slow down in the second half as they notched 52 points en route to a 105-28 victory.

The last time BHSU notched 100 points in a contest was on November 20, 2009 when they defeated Rocky Mountain College 100-65. BHSU's 105 points was one shy of the school record, which took place on November 7, 2003 in a 106-54 win over Mount Marty College.

A well-balanced scoring attack was the case against the Lady Lions. Cheyanne Balster, Bailey Kusser and Jennie Scharn each registered 14 points. Brooke Pond and Christine Thorn added 13 points each, Kassidy Scott chipped in with 11 while Sierra Toms registered 10 to round out the Yellow Jackets in double-figures.

BHSU will return to action on Friday, December 11 at Chadron State College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
