SPEARFISH, S.D.—The Black Hills State University softball team opened the Desert Stinger Tournament with three straight losses. The Yellow Jackets' 15-7 win over University of Texas Permian Basin snapped that losing streak and were hoping to build a winning streak.
That didn't happen as BHSU fell to Lubbock Christian University 13-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-4, 0-0 RMAC.
BHSU came up with a pair of runs in the first inning. Cassie Smith led off the game with a walk and came around to score on Katie Campo's triple to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Campo scored on Savanah Eckhardt's ground out to make the score 2-0.
The Chapparals responded with four runs through out the first two innings to take a 4-1 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
However, a third inning that saw the Chapparals torch BHSU for five runs put the nail in the coffin. Ashton Bell singled up the middle and came around to score on a Yellow Jacket error to make the score 5-1. Molly Davison scored on another BHSU error to widen the Lubbock Christian lead to 6-1.
Addison Ard put the exclamation point on the third inning for the Chapparals with a three-run home run to make the score 9-1. BHSU head coach Lane Leedy swapped Carrie Clark for Stafanie Witman in the pitching circle at that point.
The Yellow Jackets added a run each in the fifth and sixth inning. However, it wasn't enough as the Chapparals notched two runs in each the fourth and fifth inning to secure the 13-4 victory.
Witman took the loss in the pitching circle for BHSU. She surrendered nine runs (four earned) on nine hits in three innings of work. Erica Everson led the Yellow Jackets offensively with two hits.
BHSU will travel to Fort Lewis College on Saturday, Feb. 21. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in Durango, Colo.
