SB: Smith and Fergusson Collect Four Hits as Yellow Jackets Fall Sunday

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped a pair of contests Sunday in Alamosa, Colorado. The Yellow Jackets fell in game one 6-1 to site host Adams State while also falling 4-0 to Colorado School of Mines in game two.

Cassie Smith and Claire Fergusson each led the way for the Yellow Jackets with four hits apiece while Nia Shumpert wiped her 11th stolen base of the year.

Game One: Adams State 6 Black Hills State 1

Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Yellow Jackets picked up its run from Alexis Shaffer. Shaffer hit an infield single and was pushed to third on a Smith single into right field. Shaffer then scored on a Kelsea Nash single into left field.

However a five-run sixth inning by Adams State doomed the Green and Gold as Smith and Fergusson each went 2-for-3. Shumpert, Shaffer and Nash each collected a hit each.

Kelsi Kautz went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Grizzlies. Carlee Beck was charged with the loss (3-2) for BHSU after giving up six hits and striking out two over 5.2 innings. Kelsey Sellars pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts while scattering seven hits for the victory.

Game Two: Colorado Mines 4 Black Hills State 0

The Yellow Jackets couldn't find offense while collecting three hits in the loss. The biggest threat from the Yellow Jackets was in the second inning when Shaffer singled into left field and was pushed to second when Erica Everson reached base on an error.

The bases were then loaded when Katherine Drake bunted to the third baseman and reached on an error. However the threat was snuffed out when Shaffer was thrown out at home, followed by a strike out and ground out.

The Grizzlies scored two runs in the top of the first and added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Kaitlin Farrar pitched a complete game giving up eight hits but struck out seven. Three of the strike outs came in the third inning as she struck out the side despite a runner reaching base on an error.
Black Hills State will make its 2015 home debut on Saturday hosting Western New Mexico at the Yellow Jacket Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon as game two of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
