WBB: Opens Season Against Northern State

THE GAME - Northern State
  •  Northern State of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference ranks fifth for the Central Region in the DIISida Regional Poll.
  •  BHSU of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ranks eighth for the South Central Region in the DIISida Regional Poll.
  • There have been four different RMAC schools to defeat the Wolves dating back to the 2008-09 seasons. Colorado Mines defeated the Wolves three consecutive times (2008-2011) while Fort Lewis (2008-09), Adams State (2010-11) and SD Mines (2011-12) all have one win against them.
  • Jill Conrad, the top returner for the Wolves, led the team averaging 13.5 points per game and 6.9 rebounds last season. She scored in double-digits in 22 games. Conrad was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year for the North Division of the NSIC.
  • NSU was picked to finish first in the North Division but second overall in the NSIC behind opponent Winona State as selected by the coaches after finishing 17-5 in conference and 23-8 overall.
  • Black Hills State is slated to finish in a tie for fourth with Colorado Mesa in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after finishing 17-5 in conference and 21-8 overall and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
THE COACHES
  • Black Hills State University head coach Mark Nore owns a 253-156 record over 14 seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He is the all-time wins' leader for Yellow Jacket basketball.
  • Curt Fredrickson has coached NSU for 37 seasons attaining 796 wins. He is the second-winningest active NCAA II women's baskeball coach. He is the 16th head coach across all NCAA divisions to reach the 700-win mark. He has tallied four Hall of Fame honors, two national championships, numerous NSIC Conference titles and a tournament title. He has three straight NCAA Central Region Tournament apperances.
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
  • If BHSU wins, it will be the fifth RMAC school to defeat NSU. The Yellow Jackets trail in the all-time series 16-0.
THE COACHES' PROJECTION
  • Black Hills State was voted to tie for fourth place with Colorado Mesa in the 2016-17 RMAC Coaches' Poll. Colorado State-Pueblo was chosen as the preseason favorite with eight of 15 first-place votes.
PRESEASON ALL-RMAC
  • Taylor Trohkimoinen was named to Preseason All-RMAC Team as well as First Team All-RMAC. Trohkimoinen averaged 9.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game last season. She scored in the double digits on 11 occasions and scored a season-high 19 points twice. Brittany Hernandez of UCCS was named the Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
SEASON OPENER RECORD
  • Dating back to the 2012-13 season in the NCAA era, the Yellow Jackets are 2-3 in season openers. The Green and Gold earned its first season-opener win against Montana State-Billings in the 2012-13 season winning 65-63 and the second win came against Presentation College, 69-47, in the 2015-16 season.
YELLOW JACKET RETURNERS SEVEN ADDITIONS WELCOMED TO THE 2016-17 SQUAD
  • Head Coach Mark Nore added seven new faces to the team, quite possibly highlighted by Rebecca Stevenson, a transfer from Wentachee Valley College. The junior from Lacey, Washington, led the Knights with 12 points and 10 rebounds per game in her first two years. The other six newcomers are true freshman.
