BILLINGS, Mont. – Despite the 14-point effort by
Sierra Toms, the Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell to Northern State University 59-40 on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets kept it close with the Wolves as both teams traded off for the lead until the Northern State increased its lead by one in the last two minutes of the first quarter at 10-9. From there, Black Hills State fell into a slump as they trailed by 11 at the half.
Coming out on the attack to start the second half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run to bring the score within three at 21-18. From there, the Wolves increased the lead back up to five and just ran away with it from there.
Sierra Toms was the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets tying her career-high 14 points while
Taylor Trohkimoinen and
Rachel Erickson each scored seven points apiece.
Kassidy Scott tallied three assists for the Yellow Jackets.
Trohkimoinen and
Cheyanne Balster led the defense with six rebounds apiece while Bertram had five.
Toms was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 14 points per game.
Black Hills State falls to 0-3 on the season while Northern State improves to 3-0 overall.
The Yellow Jackets return to the Young Center to make their home debut against the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks on Friday, November 25 with tipoff set for 5 p.m.
