SPEARFISH, S.D. – A 19-0 run and four players reaching double-digits earned the Black Hills State University women's basketball team its second victory of season dominating over the Chadron State Eagles, 79-48.
A 7-0 run to start out the game is how the Yellow Jackets started their dominating performance.
Cheyanne Balster put up a quick jumper to give the Green and Gold their momentum.
Abby Switzer, who got her first career start, grabbed a pass from
Taylor Trohkimoinen to land one in the net from downtown. About a minute later, Trohkimionen drives one to the hoop to cause the Eagles to take a timeout. The Eagles tied it up by the end of the first quarter at 10.
The Green and Gold come out quick at the start of the second to take the lead again by six. Switzer and Trohkimoinen each score a trey less than a minute apart to put the Yellow Jackets up 16-10. The Eagles responded with a two-pointer by Erin Graham to stop the BHSU 6-0 run. Chadron trailed by five at the intermission, 27-22.
The Yellow Jackets momentum was unstoppable as they held a 19-0 run in the fourth quarter. BHSU led 69-44 before Kylah Collins ended the run receiving a pass from Havannah Newens to take a shot from the top of the key for two.
Black Hills State scored 32 points off its bench holding Chadron State to just six bench points. The Green and Gold held the Eagles to their lowest score of the season thus far of just 48 points. BHSU went 57 percent from the field in the second half making 19 of 33 attempts.
Switzer and Toms lead the way for the Yellow Jackets scoring 14 points apiece. Switzer scored her first collegiate double-digit game in a career-high 21 minutes of action. She went 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from downtown. Toms tied her career and season-high 14 points.
Keely Bertram and Balster contributed to the offense as well scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. Trohkimoinen handed off a season-high six assists.
On defense, freshman
Gabby Doxtator grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Alongside Doxtator, Bertram and Balster contributed both ways grabbing seven and six rebounds, respectively.
"It feels good to play well going into break and I thought everyone had the right mentality going into tonight's game," said head coach
Mark Nore.
"Our starters and bench put in a lot of great minutes and this is great momentum for us going into the break."
The Green and Gold improve to 2-8 on the season and 2-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while the Eagles fall to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets close out the 2016 portion of their season on the road heading to Colorado to face RMAC opponents Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado Christian. Tipoff for Friday, December 30 is scheduled for 5:30 pm and 3 pm Saturday.
