WBB: Yellow Jackets Fall to MSU Denver, 62-56

DENVER, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team dropped its second-straight game Saturday night in a 62-56 setback at MSU Denver in Denver, Colorado.

The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 19-6 overall and 16-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Roadrunners improve to 13-14, 11-10.

In a game that was tied for over six minutes of the total 40 minutes, the Yellow Jackets were doomed by a nine-point fourth quarter, in which their final field goal came with 5:48 remaining in the game.

After entering the intermission down 35-32, the Green and Gold took its first lead of the second half with 4:39 left in the third quarter when Christine Thorn nailed a 3-point basket for a 40-39 lead. The two teams then played hot-potato with the lead with six lead changes and three ties through the remainder of the third quarter, where it would end tied up at 47-all.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead to begin the fourth quarter on a Bailey Kusser made trey but again, MSU Denver snagged the lead after a pair of Jaelynn Smith free throws and layup. Not to be outdone, Kassidy Scott made a layup on the ensuing Green and Gold possession to retake the lead at 52-51 with 5:48 remaining.

However, with the exception of four-made free throws, the Yellow Jackets would not score again as MSU Denver clamped down defensively to give the Yellow Jackets their first losing skid of the season.

Taylor Trohkimoinen led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and eight rebounds as the Green and Gold shot just 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field including just 5-of-25 from 3-point range.

Hannah Stipanovich had a game-high 16 points off the bench for the Roadrunners who never led by more than six points, the separation of the final score.

The Yellow Jackets, who have already claimed a spot in the RMAC Shootout, closes the regular season Wednesday against South Dakota School of Mines. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff and will be played and the Rushmore Civic Center Ice Arena.
