SB: Three-Run Fifth Inning Pushes Yellow Jackets to Split Against FLC

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team took a game to get settled in but split day one of its four-game series with Fort Lewis College at the Yellow Jacket Softball Complex.

After falling 2-0 in game one, the Yellow Jackets used a three-run sixth inning to propel to a 5-2 victory over the Skyhawks. The victory gives the Yellow Jackets a 5-1 record on its home turf and a 5-14 overall with a 5-9 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Fort Lewis is 7-20 overall and 4-10 in the loop.

Game One: Fort Lewis 2 Black Hills State 0

Fort Lewis tacked on nine hits against the Yellow Jackets, who accumulated just one, and scratched a run across home plate in the second inning when Angelique Elemen scored on a Lauren Caldwell groundout. The other run came on a home run from Elemen.

Alex Wiley tallied the Yellow Jackets hit, a single into right field. Carlee Beck was charged with the loss, after pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits but against no walks. Victoria Johnson earned the win for the Skyhawks with her seven-inning one-hitter.

Game Two: Black Hills State 5 Fort Lewis 2

Stefanie Witman pitched a four-hit complete game gem to help the Yellow Jackets cause, giving up just two unearned runs for her third win in the circle.

Morgan Smith tallied two hits and two runs scored while Alex Wiley, Witman and Kelsea Nash each tallied a hit apiece.

The Yellow Jackets, down 2-0 in the second inning, pushed a pair of runs across the plate thanks to a groundout from Claire Ferfusson that scored Jo-Jo Curry from third. A batter later, Alex Wiley grounded out to second base but was enough space to score Smith from third.

The middle innings, each team limited damage until the Green and Gold had its outburst of three runs. With Alex Menke standing at third base and Curry at second base, Smith singled through the right side, pushing each runner ahead, including Menke for the go-ahead run.

Kelsea Nash then singled, scoring Curry while Smith scored on a fly out by Alex Wiley for another insurance run.

Witman did the rest in the bottom of the seventh as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 5-2 victory.

Black Hills State plays a doubleheader Sunday against FLC with an 11 a.m. first pitch for game one.
