SPEARFISH, S.D. – A double-digit effort by
Cheyanne Balster and
Gabby Doxtator carried the Black Hills State University women's basketball team to a 79-44 victory over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent New Mexico Highlands on Friday night.
A 15-0 run is how the Yellow Jackets started out the second quarter.
Julia Seamans knocked a shot down from beyond the arc to get the momentum rolling.
Abby Switzer followed that up with one made free throw out of two and it continued from there.
The Cowgirls were unable to stop the Yellow Jacket run until under three minutes left to go in the first half. Juliana Gurule dumped a pass down to Kaelin Shaffer for two to finally end the monstrous run by the Green and Gold.
The Yellow Jackets run in the second quarter continued from a 10-2 run at the end of the first quarter. Black Hills State trailed 6-13 before running the floor. Seamans dropped a shot from downtown that came from
Dylan Wright to start chipping away at the Cowgirls lead and bring the score to 13-9 to start the run.
Trailing 40-22 at halftime, the Cowgirls were looking for some momentum to close in on the Yellow Jackets.
Cheyanne Balster knocked down a two-pointer to start off the third quarter but Ari Baca answered back to start a 6-0 run for the Cowgirls but it was not enough to attack the sting of the Green and Gold.
Black Hills State outscored Highlands off the bench 44 to 18 and held the Cowgirls to just 44 points, which is their second lowest score of the season. BHSU went 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from downtown and 71.9 percent (23-of-32) from the line. The Yellow Jackets also saw their biggest lead of the game leading by 35 points with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Doxtator and Balster led the team with 11 points apiece giving Doxtator a new career and season-high. The true freshman went 5-of-8 from the field and 1-of-1 from the line in 12 minutes of action. Balster shot 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-5 from the line in 11 minutes of action.
Haley Schneider contributed offensively as well scoring seven points hitting 1-of-2 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to give her a new season and career-high.
On defense,
Dylan Wright led the team with six rebounds followed by
Cortez Standing Bear with five.
Black Hills State improves to 4-9 overall and 4-5 in conference action while New Mexico Highlands falls to 2-9 on the season and 1-7 in RMAC action.
Black Hills State returns to action on Saturday afternoon to face No. 9 Colorado State University-Pueblo for the second time in the conference series with tip off scheduled for 4 p.m.
