SPEARFISH, S.D. –
Julia Seamans' three-point performance carried the Black Hills State University women's basketball team to its fifth straight win of the season over the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats on Saturday night, 85-36.
Seamans broke the program record of three-pointers made in a game, making 8-of-14 shots from beyond the arc. Seamans scored a career-high 24 points, and went 8-of-16 from the field.
In the first quarter, Andromeda Sales scored a three-pointer to get the Wildcats on the board first within eight seconds of the game starting. About 20 seconds later, Seamans hit her first three-pointer of the game to get the Green and Gold on the board and tie the game at three.
From there,
Hannah Cass hit two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a two-point lead at 5-3. Seamans knocked down her second three of the night to increase the Black Hills State lead to five at 8-3. That was enough to get the momentum started, as BHSU closed out the quarter, 28-11.
In the second quarter, Racquel Wientjes hit a shot from downtown to start an 11-0 run for the Yellow Jackets at 37-16. With under three minutes to go,
Gabby Doxtator made a shot in the key to give the Green and Gold a 39-16 lead. Wientjes again nailed one from beyond the arc to increase the Yellow Jackets lead to 26 at 42-16.
Haley Schneider scored the last shot of the run from the three point line to give Black Hills State a 45-16 lead. The Wildcats' Kassidy McKevitt hit a last second jumper to close out the half at 45-18.
Alongside Seamans,
Abby Switzer scored 14 points, going 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line. Katie Messler notched a team-high eight assists.
Messler led the defense grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets shot 47 percent (32-of-68) from the field, 47 percent (17-of-36) from downtown, and 40 percent (4-of-10) from the line. The Green and Gold edged the Wildcats out on rebounds, 45-32.
Black Hills State improves to 5-0 on the season, while Johnson and Wales falls to 1-6 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will close out their non-conference action on Tuesday, November 21, hosting Yellowstone Christian College at 5:30 p.m. Conference action will begin Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2 with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Metropolitan State University Denver visiting the Young Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
