WBB: Yellow Jackets Await Rangers and Eagles

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team returns home to host Regis University and Chadron State College on Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting non-perishable food items at all home basketball games beginning on Friday.

The food collection is part of the annual SAAC Food War versus South Dakota Mines, and will go through February 6, when BHSU and SD Mines tip off for the final time in the regular season.

Please help the Yellow Jackets BEAT MINES in the Food War. All food will go to the local food pantry. You can leave your cans at the ticket table at any home game.

THE GAME - Regis University
  • The two teams meet for the 11th time on the hardwood on Friday, with a tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. BHSU and Regis are tied in the all-time series, 5-5.
  • Majestie Robinson is the top returner for the Rangers. Robinson was named to the All-RMAC Preseason team and currently leads the team in points. Robinson averages 14.8 points a game and earned RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on December 12. Shelby Espinosa works alongside Robinson, leading the team in rebounds with an 8.3 rpg average.
  • The Rangers are slated to finish third in the conference and currently sit just above BHSU in the standings, with a 4-5 overall record and 3-1 record in conference. The Rangers lost senior Kaylie Rader, who was an RMAC Honorable Mention member at the end of the 2016-17 season.
THE GAME- Chadron State College
  • Senior Kalli Feddersen is the top returner for the Eagles. Feddersen leads the Eagles both offensively and defensively. Feddersen is averaging 13.6 ppg and 8.3 rpg. She has started in all nine games for the Eagles and averages a .310 field goal percentage. Feddersen earned Second Team All-RMAC honors after leading the team with 14.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg last season.
  • The two teams meet at 4:30 p.m. on the hardwood on Saturday, December 16. Since joining the RMAC in 2012, BHSU leads the series, 9-1, but the Eagles lead all-time, 38-19.
  • Chadron is slated to finish in a tie for 12th with Western State, as voted on by the RMAC Coaches. The Eagles currently sit in 11th with a 3-6 record overall and they are 1-3 in conference.
THE COACHES
  • Black Hills State University head coach Mark Nore enters his 16th season with the Yellow Jackets and owns a 270-177 record. He is the all-time wins leader for the Yellow Jacket basketball team.
  • Molly Marrin enters her third year as the Rangers head coach. In the 2016-17 season, Marrin led the Rangers to its best overall record since 2006, finishing 23-8. Due to that record, she guided the team to its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Janet Raymer enters her second season as the Eagles head coach. Before taking over as head coach, Raymer was the assistant coach, dealing with the day-to-day operations, while also recruiting high school and junior college athletes. Raymer played for Chadron State earning four letters. Her senior season, she was chosen as the best defensive player and MVP by her teammates after leading the team in steals and assists.
LAST TIME OUT
 
Black Hills State dropped a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games this past weekend for its first two losses of the season. The team lost to Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian on Friday and Saturday, 83-74, and 74-68, respectively.
 
Katie Messler led the way scoring a season-high 17 points against Colorado Mines. Messler was just shy of a double-double, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Remi Wientjes was the second leading scorer with 10 points.
 
Rachel Erickson led the way against Colorado Christian notching 19 points, while Julia Seamans had 14 and Keely Bertram had 11. Messler grabbed 10 rebounds. BHSU out rebounded the Cougars, 35-34.
 
Following the weekend, the Yellow Jackets will have two weeks off before returning to action on Saturday, December 30, for their final contest of 2017, hosting Colorado State University-Pueblo. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
