SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team defeated the Chadron State College Eagles on Saturday night, 65-46.
Remi Wientjes led the way, scoring a career-high 14 points.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action, while Chadron State falls to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in RMAC play.
The Green and Gold set the pace of the game, as they controlled the tip and grabbed a 5-0 lead to start the opening quarter. At 4:46,
Abby Switzer started the second run of the quarter, as the Yellow Jackets went 8-0 in less than a two-minute span to lead, 17-5, before Savannah Weidaur hit a jumper to end the BHSU run.
In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets got on a hot streak, going on an 11-0 run to increase their lead over the Eagles, 32-16. Katie Messler started the run, hitting a jumper from the corner of the key, followed by a layup by
Remi Wientjes to give BHSU a 25-13 lead.
Gabby Doxtator scored one-of-two from the line, before
Alyssia Martinez and
Cortez Standing Bear hit the last six points of the run, scoring back-to-back three pointers to give the Yellow Jackets a 32-13 lead. Jessica Harvey ended the run to trail, 32-16, with 5:34 remaining in the first half.
From there, the Yellow Jackets managed to increase the lead and led at the half, 41-23.
In the third quarter, the Eagles came out fast, cutting into the Yellow Jacket lead and outscored the Green and Gold, 8-7, but still trailed by 17 at the end of the quarter, 48-31.
Black Hills State ran away with it in the fourth, as it increased the lead to over 20 points, before Chadron State tried to cut in on the lead. However, it was not enough, as the Yellow Jackets closed out the game, 65-49.
Remi Wientjes scored a career-high 14 points, while
Rachel Erickson had 10 points. Katie Messler tied her season-high with 12 rebounds, five of them offensively.
The Green and Gold edged out the Eagles on rebounds, 39-37.
The Yellow Jackets have two weeks off before closing out the 2017 portion of the season on Saturday, December 30, hosting the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
