WBB: Rangers Defense Stuns Yellow Jackets

DENVER, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell in its final contest of the season to the Regis Rangers on Saturday afternoon by a score of 78-51.

After trailing 48-20 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets were looking to find their momentum. The Rangers came out first to score on a layup by Karlyn Johnson to increase the lead by 30 at 50-20. Taylor Trohkimoinen answered back driving coast to coast to start cutting in on the Regis lead but Kaylie Rader had other plans to increase the lead back up to 52-22.

Kassidy Scott saw Julia Seamans open up at the top of the arc. Scott dumped the pass off to Seamans who drained it from downtown to cut in on the Rangers lead once again at 52-25. A foul by the Yellow Jackets though shortly after Seamans' shot sent Kaylie Rader to the line. Rader made 1-of-2 to give the Rangers a 53-25 lead over BHSU.

With 7:10 remaining in the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets opened up and went on a 13-0 run to trail by 19 points. The run started with Balster going 1-for-2 from the line to start cutting in on the lead at 55-26. Seamans punched the ball away from Morgan Ducklow up to Balster who drove to the net and scored to give two more points to the Green and Gold and bring the score to 55-28.

A foul on Regis sent Haley Schneider to the line with 4:40 remaining in the third. Schneider landed both free throws to continue cutting in on the lead at 55-30. About 10 seconds later, Seamans steals the ball away from the Rangers and drives coast to coast to give two more points to the Yellow Jackets.

From there, the two teams traded of missed shots until Seamans grabbed yet another steal. Julia passed it up to Trohkimoinen under the net who was fouled and sent to the line. Taylor went 1-of-2 from the line and brought the Yellow Jackets within 22 points of the Rangers at 55-33.

Following the free throws by Trohkimoinen, Regis took the ball back down the court but were unable to finish as Sierra Toms grabbed the rebound and passed it up the court. Seamans was working the top of the court looking for an opening but unable to find one she pulled up and took a shot from downtown to give three more points to the Green and Gold to trail 55-36. The final shot of the Yellow Jacket 13-0 run came from a layup down low by Toms to bring the score to 55-38 but the run was not enough for BHSU to come out with the victory.

Black Hills State shot 34.0 percent (17-of-50) from the field and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the line. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Rangers 18-9 in the third quarter to try to rally back from a 30-point deficit.

Balster led the offense with 13 points going 6-of-14 from the field and 1-of-6 from the line. Erickson was right behind with 11 points.

On the defense, Toms grabbed six rebounds, five of them defensively while Seamans grabbed a career-high five steals.

Black Hills State ends its season 9-17 overall and 9-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis improves to 21-6 on the season and 19-6 in the conference.
