WBB: Roadrunners Outpace Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – After scoring a career-high 25 points, Rachel Erickson and the Black Hills State University women's basketball team were unable to claim a victory over Metropolitan State University Denver falling 76-68 Friday evening.

After trailing 32-26 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets started finding their momentum as Julia Seamans came out on fire scoring a quick jumper in the paint to close the lead by four at 32-28. The Roadrunners responded with Jaelynn Smith making a quick pass to Georgia Ohrdorf at the top of the key to make a two-pointer to increase the lead back up to six.

With seven minutes remaining in the third, the Yellow Jackets picked up their first lead of the game by one at 37-36 with Erickson going coast to coast. That would not last long though as the Roadrunners answered back with J'Nae Squires-Horton sending a pass up to Jaelynn Smith who took the lead back for MSU Denver, 38-37.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Erickson lit up scoring a layup to close in on the Roadrunners lead 53-49. From there, MSU Denver increased the lead back up to eight with Ohrdorf hitting two shots back-to-back to lead 57-49.

With 7:57 remaining in the game, Cheyanne Balster once again tried to close the lead on the Roadrunners. Receiving a pass from Erickson, Balster dumped it into the net to bring the score to 58-51 but that was not enough to overcome MSU Denver. Metro State closed the game out at 76-68.

Alongside Erickson, Seamans scored 13 points to contribute to the Yellow Jacket offense.

On defense, Kassidy Scott grabbed the team high seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 8-13 overall and 8-9 in conference action while the Roadrunners improve to 14-9 on the season and 10-6 in conference play.

Black Hills State returns to action on Saturday afternoon hosting the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with tipoff slated for 4 p.m.
