SB: Regis Stings Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in its doubleheader on Sunday to Regis University by scores of 4-0 and 8-4.

The Sunday games were designated to the First Responders of a tragic house fire that took the lives of five children. The Yellow Jackets also wore special uniforms in honor of those children.

Black Hills State falls to 5-35 on the season and 3-29 in conference action while Regis improves to 28-24 overall and 20-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Game One: RU 4 BHSU 0

After two scoreless innings, the Rangers let the bats fly in the third. With two outs, Macy Cox stepped up and drew the walk to begin the scoring play. Cox stole second to place herself closer to scoring position. Emily John singled to left center to score Cox for the 1-0 lead.

After Bradey King was hit by the pitch to advance John to second, Carlie Sexton singled up the middle to advance King to second and score John for a 2-0 lead. King was able to advance an extra base to third off an error by the Yellow Jackets. The final out came from a strikeout by Stefanie Witman.

From there, the Rangers momentum carried as they scored runs in the fourth and sixth to end the game 4-0.

Morgan Smith and Katelyn Odle each went 2-for-3 from the plate tallying four of the five hits by the Yellow Jackets. Maddie London registered the other hit for the offense.

Witman was charged with the loss after striking out six batters in seven innings while Logan Losh picked up the win for the Rangers after shutting out the Green and Gold and striking out six.

Game Two: RU 8 BHSU 4

A three-run inning pushed the Rangers past the Yellow Jackets in game two.

In the second inning, Regis led off taking a quick 2-0 lead. With one out, Melissa Heronema reached first on an error by BHSU. Heronema stole second to advance to scoring position. The next at-bat, Taylor Armitage singled up the middle to score Heronema for the 1-0 lead.

From there, Macy Cox stepped in to pinch run for Armitage and advanced to second on a ground out by Alyssa Finger. Cox scored the second run after stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error by BHSU to lead 2-0.

That did not stop the Yellow Jackets though as Alex Wiley hit a leadoff single up the middle. Jordyn Ballard stepped up to the plate and put some power behind the ball smashing a double to left center to score Wiley to land BHSU on the board and trail 2-1.

In the third, Maddie London led off hitting a double to left field. Katelyn Odle got out at first but pushed London to third. Wiley's single up the middle scored London to tie the game 2-2. From there, Ballard crushed her first career home run over the left field line fence scoring Wiley and giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the series at 4-2.

That was not enough though as the Rangers slowly battled back in the fifth. Bradey King led off with a single to center field. The next at-bat, Carlie Sexton doubled to right center scoring Michelle Larose, who pinch ran for King, to trail 4-3.

In the sixth, Laura Scheffel doubled to right field. King stepped up to the plate with two outs and one on and cracked a home run down the left field line to score Scheffel and take a one run lead over BHSU 5-4. From there, Sexton drew the walk to land on base. Lauren Hernandez followed with a single to right field advancing Sexton third. Breana Pearsall loaded the bases with a single to first.

With three on and two outs, Heronema singled to shortstop keeping the bases loaded and scoring Sexton for the 6-4 lead. Wiley got out of the jam with a final strike out of the inning.

The Rangers went on to score two more runs in the seventh to end the game 8-4.

The Yellow Jackets tallied 10 hits with four runs and four RBIs. Ballard led the offense going 3-for-4 from the plate and registering three RBIs and one run while Wiley went 2-for-3 scoring two runs and tallying an RBI. Dominique DiManna and London each had two hits while London had one run. Kindall Bethke contributed the last hit for the offense.

Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching seven innings and striking out five while Losh picked up the win for the Rangers after pitching 4.2 innings giving up just one hit and striking out four.

Following the weekend, Black Hills State steps out of conference action and travels to Dickinson, North Dakota, for a double-header against Dickinson State on Tuesday, April 25. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
