SPEARFISH, S.D. –
Remi Wientjes's 14-point effort helped lead the Black Hills State University women's basketball team to its fourth consecutive win in a victory over Westminster College on Thursday night, 58-38.
The Yellow Jackets improve their record to 15-4 overall and 9-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Griffins fall to 8-8 overall and 7-5 in RMAC play.
At the end of the first quarter, the Green and Gold led by six points at 15-9 after the Griffins cut in on a 10-point lead. Within the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, Westminster cut the lead down to four with Haddi Williams hitting a shot from the top of the key.
From there, BHSU went on an 11-0 run to take the lead up to 15 points at 26-11.
Rachel Erickson started the run on a three-point play, driving the baseline to hit a layup and drew a foul on the Griffins to go to the line for one.
Hannah Cass followed suit with a layup.
Lyndzi Rich received a dump pass from Erickson to hit a shot from the top of the key.
Keely Bertram grabbed a steal and dumped it off to
Remi Wientjes, who drove coast to coast for the bucket.

However, the Griffins did not give up, as they answered back with an 11-0 run in the final four and a half minutes of the quarter, as they trailed, 26-11. Haddi Williams, the top performer of the night for Westminster, scored six of those 11 points, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cut in on the BHSU lead, 26-17. Kaylee Carlsen dropped one in from downtown as well to chip away at the lead of the Yellow Jackets at 26-20. Haddi Williams hit the final shot of the quarter with a layup in the paint to head into halftime trailing, 26-22.
After the intermission, the Yellow Jackets started to find their momentum, as they came out with two quick buckets by
Remi Wientjes and
Katie Messler.
Remi Wientjes hit a shot from downtown to take the Green and Gold lead back up to 11 at 33-22. From there, the Griffins struggled to cut back in on the lead, as BHSU ended the third quarter, 43-31.
In the fourth quarter, Black Hills State ran away with it, outscoring Westminster, 15-7, and closing out the game at 58-38.
Haddi Williams registered a double-double for the Griffins, scoring a team-high 17 points, leading all scorers, and she also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Remi Wientjes led the Yellow Jacket offense, tying her career and season-high points with 14. Erickson and Rich were right behind with eight points each.
Hannah Cass dominated the boards for the Green and Gold, grabbing a career and season-high nine rebounds, seven of them defensively.
The Green and Gold defense shut down RMAC Player of the Week, Denise Gonzalez, holding her to a season-low four points, along with holding Hunter Krebs to four points. The Yellow Jackets edged the Griffins out on rebounds, 39-36.
"Our team showed a lot of grit and toughness," said head coach
Mark Nore. "Having the schedule we had, playing four games in seven days, is a very difficult challenge. I give all the credit to the team for having the courage to play the way they did and fight through fatigue. Our leadership was awesome. Our team spirit was awesome. The crowds we had at our games was awesome."
Black Hills State embarks on a five-game road stretch, starting in Grand Junction, Colo., at Colorado Mesa University on Friday, January 26 and then head to Gunnison, Colo., to take on Western State on Saturday, January 27. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
