WBB: Yellow Jackets edge Cardinals in overtime

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team needed an extra five minutes, but the Yellow Jackets defeated William Jewell College, 66-62, on Friday afternoon. BHSU moves to 3-0 on the season for the second consecutive year.

Remi Wientjes led the way for the Yellow Jackets (3-0) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Julia Seamans had 17 points, while Katie Messler pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds while adding eight points.

BHSU jumped out to an 8-1 lead over the Cardinals (1-1). However, William Jewell fought back to take a 10-8 lead with three minutes to play in the first quarter. A layup and two free throws by Lyndzi Rich gave the lead back to the Yellow Jackets, 12-10, and the Green and Gold led, 14-13, after one period of play.

The Cardinals came out hot in the second quarter, using a 10-0 run to lead by nine, 23-14. A three-pointer halted the WJC run. Seamans and Remi Wientjes followed with shots of their own to narrow the lead to one, 23-22, with 5:53 to play before the half. The rest of the half was back-and-forth action, and William Jewell led by two, 29-27, at the break.

The third quarter was more of the same, with the Yellow Jackets outscoring the Cardinals by one over the 10 minutes. BHSU trailed, 43-42, with a period to play. In the fourth quarter, neither team was able to extend a lead to more than two points, and at the end of regulation, there was nothing to separate them.

With 1:44 to play in the overtime period, the Cardinals led, 62-61. Rich then fought for an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer and was fouled. She made the first of her free throws to tie up the game, and Remi Wientjes got the offensive rebound off the second shot from the charity stripe. Remi Wientjes finished through contact, earning three points the old fashioned way, to put the Yellow Jackets up by three, 65-62, with 47 seconds to play. Seamans would sink a free throw with 11 seconds to play to ice the game and keep the Green and Gold undefeated.

BHSU shot 42.0 percent from the field (21-for-50), while WJC was 37.5 percent from the floor (21-for-56). The Yellow Jackets were 7-for-20 (35.0 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Cardinals were 5-for-20 (25.0 percent) on three-pointers. The Green and Gold outrebounded WJC, 41-29.

Antoinette Mussorici and Sydney Offield each had 15 points to lead the Cardinals, while Natalie Closser had 13.

The Green and Gold will next wrap up play at the Ramada Classic on November 17. The Yellow Jackets will clash with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m. mountain time.
