WBB: Ham’s 22-points leads BHSU to victory over the Rangers

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team stays undefeated this season after defeating the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 79-60, on Saturday.   
 
Morgan Ham led the game with a career-high 22 points and five assists.  Remi Wientjes recorded 17 points, while Julia Seamans had 13.  Katie Messler and Ham pulled down seven rebounds each.  
 
In the first thirty seconds of the game, the Rangers opened with a basket beyond the arc, but was immediately responded with the Yellow Jackets going on a 9-0 run.  Remi Wientjes and Julia Seamans kept the momentum, making back-to-back 3-pointers to lead, 15-8.   A layup from Seamans advanced the Yellow Jackets to end the first period with a 21-14 score, in favor of the Green and Gold.
 
The Rangers narrowed Black Hills State's lead in the second quarter, using a 6-2 run to bring the score within three.  A layup by Morgan Ham broke Parkside's run.  Back-and-forth action kept the game tight with less than three minutes remaining   Ashlee Beacom broke away with a steal to make a key layup, putting the Green and Gold ahead by 10. The Yellow Jackets went on to lead, 40-28, at the end of the half.
 
Ham led off the second half going on her own 5-0 run to put the Green and Gold ahead, 45-31.  With just 26 seconds to go in the period, Katie Messler closed the quarter with a layup, giving BHSU a 60-48 advantage.  The Yellow Jackets pulled ahead 20 points for their largest lead of the season.    Katie Messler brought down a defensive rebound before Abby Switzer would make the layup to seal the deal.
 
BHSU shot 55.5 percent (33-for-60) from the field, while Parkside shot 21-for-59 (35.6 percent) from the floor.  The Yellow Jackets were 8-for-16 (50 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Rangers were 11-for-29 (37.9 percent).  The Green and Gold outrebounded UWP, 39-27.
 
Carolina Rahkonen and Blair Arthur led the Rangers, totaling 12 points each, while Asiah Lawson had 10. 
 
The Yellow Jackets will next play against state rival South Dakota Mines on December 1 to tip off league play.  Black Hills State will take on the Hardrockers at 5:30 p.m. in Rapid City, S.D.
