DURANGO, Colo. – Morgan Ham scored 19 second half points, as the Black Hills State University women's basketball team took down Fort Lewis, 65-55, on Saturday evening to wrap up the 2018 portion of the schedule.
Ham led the Yellow Jackets (8-1, 4-1 RMAC) with 23 points. She also added seven rebounds. Julia Seamans tallied 17 points, while Racquel Wientjes added 13.
The first three quarters were a battle. Neither team was able to get on the board until almost three minutes into the game, before Wientjes made a three-pointer to give BHSU a 3-0 lead with 7:12 to go in the first. The Skyhawks (5-5, 2-3 RMAC) responded on the ensuing possession. After another three minute scoreless stretch, the Yellow Jackets eventually led, 14-8, after 10 minutes.
The first five minutes of the second quarter were all Fort Lewis, as they used a 10-2 run to take a two-point lead, 18-16. The Skyhawks would push their lead out to as many as seven, but a Seamans three as time expired helped bring the Yellow Jackets within three, 28-25, at the break.
At the end of the third quarter, FLC led, 43-42, leaving it all down to the final 10 minutes. With 4:19 to play, the game was tied, 50-50, when Lyndzi Rich grabbed an offensive rebound and her layup gave the Yellow Jackets a lead they would not relinquish. The visitors used a 15-5 lead to secure the RMAC win, and a fourth consecutive victory.
BHSU shot 40.0 percent from the field (20-for-50), while FLC was 32.2 percent from the floor (19-for-59). The Yellow Jackets were 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Skyhawks were 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (15-for-21), while Fort Lewis was 86.7 percent (13-for-15). The Green and Gold outrebounded Fort Lewis, 38-32.
Sydney Candelaria led the Skyhawks with 14 points, while Kayla Herrera added 11.
The game was the final of the 2018 part of the schedule. The Green and Golf will return to action January 4 when they play at Western. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Gunnison, Colo.
