SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell to the Westminster Griffins, 92-89, in overtime, to end a five-game win streak, on Friday night's home opener. The Yellow Jackets move to 5-1 on the season.
Julia Seamans led the Green and Gold with 22 points, followed by
Lyndzi Rich with 20. Rich brought down six rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to get a substantial lead. A three-pointer by
Julia Seamans ended the first quarter with the score tied at 22-22. With a second left in the half, a couple of free throws put the Griffins (4-2, 2-0 RMAC) ahead, 39-37, at halftime.
Westminster led, 48-44, with 4:55 left in third quarter. A jumper for the Yellow Jackets brought the score within one, as the Yellow Jackets trailed, 55-54. A shot beyond the arc for Seamans and three-point play by
Alyssia Martinez tied the game, 74-74, with less than two minutes of regulation. A three-pointer for Martinez gave the Yellow Jackets its first lead of the game. With 2 seconds left, the Griffins tied up the score to send the game into overtime.
The Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 run to lead the Yellow Jackets. Freshman
Ashlee Beacom sunk two free throws to tie up the game, before a jumper by
Morgan Ham put the Green and Gold ahead, 89-88. The Griffins would go for a layup to take back the lead and the game.
Westminster shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-for-60), while BHSU was 44.4 percent from the floor (32-for-72). Both teams shot for 40.0 percent as the Griffins were 8-for-20, and the Green and Gold shot 10-for-25 from beyond the arc. Westminster outrebounded the Black Hills State 39-34.
Denise Gonzalez led the Griffins with 27 points, while Kaitlin Toluono led with 11 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will next play Dixie State on December 8, to end the home stand. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
