NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Trevecca Nazarene on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets fell, 19-5, in five innings in the first game, and 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
Alex Wiley and
Morgan Smith each hit home runs, while
Maddie London also recorded an RBI.
Katelyn Odle finished the day 4-for-5 with two doubles, a hit-by-pitch, and a run scored.
Trevecca Nazarene 19, BHSU 5 (5 innings)
The Trojans (5-3) took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and scored four more runs in the second inning. The home team scored seven runs in the third before recording an out, and led 19-0 heading into the fourth inning.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fourth.
Katelyn Odle led off with a double, and
Maddi Fidler singled through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out.
Alex Wiley came up to bat and crushed a ball over the left center fence for her second home run of the year. Two batters later,
Melissa Gellermann tripled down the right field line.
Maddie London then singled in her at bat, bringing Gellermann around to score, and bringing the score to 19-4.
After a three up, three down bottom of the fourth, the Green and Gold came up to bat for their last chance in the game.
Morgan Smith opened the inning with a homer, her first of the year. Fidler was able to record a two-out single, but was stranded, ending the game at 19-5.
Odle and Fidler each recorded two hits in the game, while Smith, Wiley, Gellermann, and London each tallied a hit.
Gellermann (0-4) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, allowing eight runs and striking out three in 3.0 innings.
Paige McGuire allowed six runs in 0.2 innings and
Breanne Henricksen gave up five runs in 0.1 innings. Morgan Powell (2-1) earned the victory for the Trojans.
Trevecca Nazarene 8, BHSU 0 (5 innings)
The Yellow Jackets got a runner on base in the top of the first inning, but were unable to capitalize, and the Trojans took advantage, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. After the Green and Gold once again stranded a runner in the second, TNU scored five runs, taking a 7-0 lead into the third inning.
BHSU stranded four runners over the next three innings, but were ultimately unable to bring anyone around to score. Trevecca added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to earn an 8-0 win.
Odle went 2-for-2 in the game, while Wiley was 1-for-1 with a walk.
Wiley (0-3) took the loss in the circle. She allowed eight runs in four innings, striking out three.
The Green and Gold are scheduled to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on February 24 and 25. BHSU is scheduled to host Adams State in a double header on Saturday beginning at noon, and a twin bill on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
