Yellow Jackets set to travel to N.M. Highlands

A Big Victory: Coming off a 48-28 victory against the Hardrockers and reclaiming the Homestake Trophy, the Yellow Jackets are now 2-4 in the RMAC. Payten Gilmore led the team with 134 rushing yards against SDM and accounted for three touchdowns. Quarterback Chance Eben had 211 passing yards as well as two touchdowns. Leading the way with 11 tackles, was Josh Gurnaby and Cole Miller added seven more and a sack. The Green and Gold are now headed to New Mexico Highlands University on Oct. 19 to take on the Cowboys. The kickoff takes place at 1 p.m.  
 
Last Meeting: BHSU outscored New Mexico Highlands last year in Spearfish, 42-7. Payten Gilmore scored three touchdowns and broke the single-game rushing record, with 248 yards. The old record was 244 yards, set by Phydell Paris against New Mexico Highlands in the 2016 game. Ryan Hommel threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns and Austin Goddard had 11 tackles and Josh Gurnaby had 10.
 
About New Mexico Highlands University: New Mexico Highland's last battle was against #14 Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. The Cowboys lost, 42-13. Ramone Atkins finished the first half of the game with 5 of 12 completions, accounting for 37 yards and an interception. Quarterback Gunner Mefferd ended the half with 5 of 13 completions and 57 yards passing and senior J'Juan Muldrow led the Cowboys with two receptions and 38 yards. These upperclassmen have been crucial in leading the way for the Cowboys.
 
Series History: Last season, the Yellow Jackets won against the Cowboys 42-7. This will be the team's seventh time meeting, with BHSU leading the series 4-2.  In 2016, the Green and Gold had a big win against the Cowboys and set a new team record for rushing yards at 447.

Temperature: The forecast shows Saturday's temperature in Las Vegas, New Mexico to be around 65 degrees at 1 p.m. It is supposed to be sunny with clear skies, a low around 45 degrees and winds SW at 10 to 20 mph. 
 
 
General Notebook
 
Captains: The Green and Gold Captains are Josh Gurnaby, Payten Gilmore, Kadim Philip, and Joe Moraga, all chosen by their teammates.
 
Recognizing the Fight: Linebacker Brett Lamb will not be on the field this season, but his Yellow Jacket brothers wear orange ribbons to support Lamb as he is fighting leukemia.
 
Experience First: BHSU has 12 returning starters from the 2018 season. Eight offensive players return, with four defensive starters returning, including Bailey Rosenstrauch and Josh Gurnaby. They had at least 60 tackles last season. Also, a returner is a four-time starter Payten Gilmore who has been a big piece to the Jackets defense in rushing yards.
 
Discipline: The Yellow Jackets were the least penalized team in the conference for the 2018 season. This season, the Jackets are only giving up 42.0 yards in penalties, which is the least in the league as of now.
 
Academic Honors: The 2018 season had 10 players earn RMAC academic honors. Returners for the 2019 squad included First Team academic honor Bailey Rosenstrauch. Returners Jake Basinger, Jarett Jenson, and Trig Olson earned all-RMAC Honor Roll.
 
RMAC Honors: The past season led to several Yellow Jackets earning conference honors. Returners, Jack Parks and Kielar Harpham were named All-RMAC Honorable Mention.
