LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Black Hills State University football team scored first, but ultimately fell to New Mexico Highlands, 17-13, on Saturday afternoon.  

The Yellow Jackets (2-5, 2-5 RMAC) drew first blood with a short three-yard run into the endzone. It took almost 10 minutes off the clock for the first score to take place. The Cowboys (1-5, 1-5 RMAC) responded later in the second quarter with their own touchdown with 13:17 remaining.

As the final seconds ticked down in the second quarter, NMHU capitalized off of a 22-yeard touchdown pass making the score 14-10 going into halftime. This would be the last score until the fourth quarter.

The final quarter of play included field goals from both teams. Sean Dorney of the Jackets completed a 28-yard field goal with 5:20 left in the fourth. Isreal Farfan of the Cowboys answered back just a little over a minute later with a 34-yard field goal making the final score 17-13 in favor of NMHU.

The Yellow Jackets rushed for a total of 92 yards while the Cowboys totaled 288 yards. Both teams walked away with no interceptions with the Jackets totaling 173 yards of passing surpassing the Cowboys' 116 yards.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road next week to travel to Colorado Mesa on October 26^th. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
