Falling Short: The Green and Gold fell short to Colorado Mesa last Saturday afternoon, putting them 2-6 in RMAC play. Odds were not in the Yellow Jackets favor as the Mavericks returned the opening kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown. Within the next minute of the game, CO Mesa lengthened their lead with a pick-six. Most of the Jacket's points were put up in the second half, minus a touchdown by
Payten Gilmore in the first half. Quarterback
Chance Ebens completed 17 passes and one touchdown,
Andre Renteria rushed 77 yards with a touchdown and Gilmore rushed for 61 yards with 37 receiving yards on his one carry. He also led the team in scoring with two touchdowns.
Sam Garcia led the defensive end with 9 tackles and one sack. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold fell short, 21-58. The Yellow Jackets are looking for a comeback and a RMAC win against Western Colorado University this Saturday, November 2
nd. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Lyle Hare Stadium.
Last Meeting: The last time the Yellow Jackets matched up with Western Colorado, the Mountaineers came out on top with a 28-6 victory. The Mountaineers opened the game with a touchdown just 2 minutes into the game and led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. BHSU had a difficult time getting their offense going throughout the game but both teams had a strong defensive showing.
Payten Gilmore rushed for 118 yards; it was his second time passing the century mark in the 2018 season.
About Western Colorado University: The Western CO Mountaineers are sitting 4-4 overall and 4-3 in RMAC play. The Mountaineers shutdown the Fort Lewis Skyhawks last Saturday to come out on top with a 31-0 victory. They were able to get the win despite not having their leading tackler and starting middle linebacker, Lane Farris along with starting quarterback Connor Desch, both out due to injury. Recently, Redshirt Senior Desmond Marfizo was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. Marzfizo had a huge game against the Skyhawks, contributing 9 tackles, including 6 for a loss and 2 sacks, as well as a blocked field goal. Senior kicker Chandler Davis went 4-for-5 on field goals and the Mountaineers also had a blocked field goal and punt.
Series History: The Mountaineers lead the series with the Yellow Jackets, 3-4. The last win for BHSU against the Mountaineers was in 2017 when the Jackets forced 7 turnovers and won 40-0. Since the 2017 win, the Green and Gold have not won against Western CO since the 2013 season. This Saturday's game will be a great opportunity for BHSU to tie up the series history with the Mountaineers.
