Spearfish, SD - The Black Hills State University women's basketball team took down Montana State University Billings 60-42 to move to 3-0 on the season.
Alyssia Martinez led the offense with 12 points.
The night was defined by fouls and free throws. The Yellow Jackets scored nearly a third of their points from the free throw line, making 18 of 21. Martinez was six for eight while
Morgan Ham was five for six. Meanwhile, Billings was 17 for 27 from the free throw line. Their inconsistently at the charity stripe allowed some breathing room for the Green and Gold.
Despite trailing early, the Yellow Jackets offense took the first two quarters 17-9 and 20-13. Billings was ready in the second half, holding the Jackets to 12 in the third and 11 in the fourth. Rebounds helped tip the scale towards the Yellow Jackets. The team posted 43 rebounds, and were lead by
Katie Messler with eight and
Abby Switzer with seven.
Racquel Wientjes was the other double digit point scorer, she posted 11 points on five baskets.
The Yellow Jackets will have a quick turn around as they take to the road this Friday to take on Northern State University. Tip off is scheduled for 5pm mountain time.
