TUCSON, Ariz – The Black Hills State University softball team split the first day of the Cactus Classic on Friday evening. In the first game, the Yellow Jackets fell, 4-0, to Simon Fraser, before defeating Oklahoma Baptist, 2-0, in the nightcap.
SFU 4, BHSU 0
The Clan jumped on top in the top of the first inning, leading off the game with back-to-back triples, before a single put SFU up, 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the first, with Alex Wiley leading off with a single. However, they were unable to plate anyone.
The BHSU defense firmed up, not allowing a hit again until the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Green and Gold got runners on first and second, but Morgan Smith smoked a ball straight at the second baseman, who was able to snag it for the third out, and end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, Simon Fraser added two insurance runs. The Yellow Jackets were unable to bring across any runs, and ultimately fell, 4-0.
Kindall Bethke was 2-for-3, while Wiley, Samantha Schoen, and Bryce Henricksen each recorded a hit in the game.
Alex Wiley (1-2) took the complete game loss in the circle for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed four runs in seven innings, while striking out three.
BHSU 2, OBU 0
Under the lights, the Yellow Jackets and Bison defense battled in game two. Neither team was able to plate a run for the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, Maddi Fidler opened the inning reaching second base on an error. Brittany Henricksen moved the pinch runner, Lizzy Johnson, over to third with a bunt single, before Samantha Scchoen walked to load the bases. With Morgan Smith up to bat, Johnson was able to come in on a wild pitch to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The Green and Gold added an additional run in the fifth inning. Katelyn Odle hit a one-out single, followed by Kindall Bethke hitting a single to put runners on first and second. After a foul out advanced Odle to third, Brittany Henricksen got in on the fun, hitting an RBI infield single.
The Yellow Jacket defense was easily able to protect the two-run lead, and BHSU secured the victory.
Odle and Brittany Henricksen each finished the game with two hits, while Wiley, Bethke, and Schoen chipped in hits.
Crystal Amaral (1-2) earned the complete game shutout win. She allowed just three hits in seven innings of work while striking out five.
The Green and Gold wrap up the Cactus Classic on February 16 against Texas-Permian Basin, at 12:30 p.m., and Saint Martin's, at 3 p.m..
