DENVER, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell to Colorado School of Mines, 11-3, on Sunday evening to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference slate of games. The game was played at MSU Denver's campus due to weather in Spearfish.
The Yellow Jackets (3-6, 0-1 RMAC) opened the game on the front foot, recording a three-up, three-down top of the first before taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Wiley started the inning with a single, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Maddi Fidler smoked a single down the right field line, allowing Wiley to come around and score.
BHSU added a second run in the second inning, when Bryce Henricksen got on base via a walk, and was brought home on an RBI groundout by Wiley.
However, the Orediggers (2-7, 1-0 RMAC) responded in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Clara Larson hit a bases clearing double to give CSM a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, Fidler recorded her second RBI of the day, doubling to bring in Kindall Bethke, who singled to open the inning.
Mines retook the lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. They would add an insurance run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to lead, 9-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the Green and Gold had a runner in scoring position, but was unable to bring her around, and CSM went on to add two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 11-3 victory.
Maddi Fidler finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Wiley, Odle, Bethke, and Bryce Henricksen each recorded a hit in the game.
