WBB: Yellow Jackets drop to CSU-Pueblo, 73-63

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell to CSU-Pueblo, 73-63, on Saturday night.

BHSU (12-8, 8-8 RMAC) had four players hit double-figure scoring, led by Racquel Wientjes with 18.  Following Wientjes, Morgan Ham totaled 15, while Julia Seamans and Alyssia Martinez had 10 each.  Katie Messler brought down seven boards to lead the Yellow Jackets.

With back-and-forth action in the first quarter, neither team was able to set a steady lead over the other, until a layup pushed the Thunderwolves (12-10, 10-6 RMAC) ahead by two.  A three-pointer by Morgan Ham and jumper by Ashlee Beacom gave the Yellow Jackets a 27-23 lead, before CSU-Pueblo responded with a 7-0 run to lead the Green and Gold.  A three-point jumper at the buzzer advanced the Thunderwolves to lead 33-32 at the break.

The Yellow Jackets went on a 15-4 run to open the second half, to stride ahead of the Thunderwolves with their largest lead of the night.  CSU-Pueblo hit another shot at the buzzer, tying the game, 49-49, to head into the fourth quarter.  Unable to string together a successful run, BHSU would ultimately fall, 70-63.

Jennah Knafelc and Khiya Adams led the Thunderwolves with 15 points each, while Adams had seven rebounds to lead CSU-Pueblo.

The Thunderwolves shot 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the field, while the Yellow Jackets shot 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor.   CSU-Pueblo was 2-for-7 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc, while BHSU was 9-for-25 (36.0 percent).  The Green and Gold shot 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the charity stripe, while the Thunderwolves shot 70.4 percent (19-for-27). BHSU outrebounded CSU-Pueblo, 46-36.

The Yellow Jackets will next head to Las Vegas, N.M., to take on New Mexico Highlands, on Feb. 9. The start time is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday.
