ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team split a doubleheader with Adams State University on Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets (7-10, 4-5 RMAC) totaled 24 runs in the two games, defeating the Grizzlies (5-19, 5-7 RMAC), 13-7, in the first game, and falling, 12-11, in the nightcap.
BHSU 13, ASU 7
The Green and Gold jumped on top first in the opening game of the day. With two outs, Alex Wiley hit a double. Four straight singles allowed Wiley, Maddi Fidler, and Samantha Schoen to score, putting the Yellow Jackets up, 3-0, after the top of the first inning.
The Grizzlies responded, getting one run back in each of the bottom of the first and second innings, but BHSU scored two more runs in the third inning on a two-run Brittany Henricksen homerun. ASU kept pace in the bottom of the third, bringing across three runs, to tie up the game, 5-5. Â
Neither team would score again until the sixth inning, when the Green and Gold put up six runs on five hits, taking advantage of three Grizzly errors. The Yellow Jackets would add to their cushion in the top of the seventh, as Caitlyn Graves and Maddie London each hit RBI singles to extend the lead to 13-5. ASU was able to score twice in the bottom of the seventh, but the BHSU defense held, securing the conference victory. Â
Wiley finished the game 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Graves, London, Fidler, and Brittany Henricksen all tallied two runs batted in, while Schoen picked up the 10th RBI of the game. The Yellow Jackets recorded 19 hits in the game
Darian Gottfried started the game in the circle, allowing five runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings. Crystal Amaral (3-2) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets. She threw the final 4.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), while striking out seven. Taylor Sandoval (2-3) took the loss for the Grizzlies.
ASU 12, BHSU 11
Although the Yellow Jackets got two runners on in the first inning, they were unable to score first, and the Grizzlies went ahead, 2-0 in the bottom of the first. The home team scored seven runs in the second to lead, 9-0, before BHSU was able to get on the board in the third with a Graves sacrifice fly, which brought around Makenzi Strong.
The Yellow Jackets continued to chip away, scoring another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Katelyn Odle. However, in the bottom of the fourth, ASU scored twice, going up, 11-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Green and Gold scored twice, and plated another run in the sixth. BHSU used a big seventh inning to tie up the game, 7-7. The visitors scored six runs in the inning. However, the Grizzlies were able to score an unearned run in the bottom the frame, earning the walkoff victory, and a series split.
Odle went 4-for-5 in the game with an RBI. Brittany Henricksen hit her second homerun of the game, and third of the season, and tallied three RBI, putting her total for the day at five. Graves finished the day with four runs batted in after putting up another two in the second game. Meanwhile, Dominique DiManna was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Kindall Bethke hit her second triple of the season. The Yellow Jackets had 15 hits as a team in the game.
Amaral threw the first 1.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) and striking out three. Kyndal Wallace threw 2.0 innings, allowing five runs, while Breanne Henricksen (0-2) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in the final 3.0 innings. Â
The Green and Gold will next be in action March 16-17 for a four game series against Fort Lewis. Saturday's doubleheader in Durango, Colorado, is scheduled to begin at noon.
