SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University track and field teams opened the outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open on Friday and Saturday. The women won eight events, while the men won three at the only home meet of the outdoor season for the Green and Gold.
In the men's high jump, Tristan Hepp was second and Drazen Moratzka was third. Hoyt Nicholas took second in the hammer throw. In the men's decathlon, Ryan Olsen took first with 5,671 points.
The running events got underway with the 3000m steeplechase, with Jake Iverson taking first (9:39.58) and Keith Osowski taking second. In the 4x100 relay race, the Yellow Jacket team made up of Garrett Snook, Brian Kjerstad, Nana Kwame Dwamena, and Tristan Hepp, was second. In the men's 1500, the Yellow Jackets took the top five spots, with Jordan Theisen leading the way, taking first in 4:01.80. Jonah Theisen was second, and Levi Fried was third.
Seth Kovar took first in the 110 meter hurdles, while Taylor Hepp was second in the 400 (49.17). In the 800, Jordan Theisen took second and Fried was third. Seth Hills was third in the 400 meter hurdles. In the 200 meter hurdles, Tristan Hepp was second and Brian Kjerstad was third.
In the 5000 meters, Nathan Fredrick took second, while the 4x400 meter relay team of Kjerstad, Tristan Hepp, Jonah Theisen, and Snook were second.
Whitney Scott placed second in the pole vault, while Hannah Hendrick was third. In the high jump, Alexandra Richards was second, while she won the javelin throw. Kyla Sawvell won the hammer throw, shot put, and discus throw. Danielle Noble took third in the discus.
In the women's 1500, members of the Green and Gold finished first and second, with Erica Dykstra in first (4:58.79) and Nicole Davis in second (5:00.47). In the 100 meter hurdles, Katie Campbell took first in 16.17, while Julette Goehring was third, and Vanessa Clark was fourth. Goehring and Clark were second and third, respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles. Breanne Fuller won the 100 meter dash in 12.70, and the 200 meter dash in 26.29.
In the 800 meters, Cailey Roth (2:18.49) and Dystra (2:23.08) were first and second. Nicole Davis won the 5000 meters, while Tori Moore was third and Savannah Davis was fourth. The Yellow Jackets' 4x400 meter relay team of Roth, Mayson Hudyma, Ruby Lundquist, and Zoe Langseth took first.
Black Hills State will next compete at the Tom Benich Invite hosted by Northern Colorado on March 30.
