SB: Bethke homers, but Yellow Jackets drop two to #15 Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped two games to No. 15-ranked Colorado Mesa University on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets (9-14, 6-9 RMAC) fell, 11-0, in the first game, before the Mavericks took game two, 15-1. The Green and Gold snapped CMU's 21-inning scoreless streak when they scored in the first inning of the second game.

CMU 11, BHSU 0 (5 innings)

In the first inning against the nationally ranked Mavericks, Kindall Bethke hit a two-out single, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to bring across a run, and the score would remain 0-0 until the third. In the home half of the inning, CMU took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Kellie Mrofcza.

Bethke would get another single in the top of the fourth, but the Mavericks broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 10 runs on six hits, including two homers. The Green and Gold were able to get one runner on in the fifth, when Maddie London drew a two-out walk, but the Yellow Jackets would ultimately fall, 11-0.

Bethke recorded the only two hits of the game for the Yellow Jackets.

Crystal Amaral (6-3) took the loss in the circle for BHSU. She allowed seven runs in four innings with one strikeout.

CMU 15, BHSU 1 (5 innings)

The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the second game of the doubleheader. Bethke came up with two outs and smashed a home run to left field to give BHSU a 1-0 lead. The run snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak by the Mavericks.

CMU got things going in the third inning, scoring 14 runs on nine hits. The home team added another run in the fourth, and took the second game, 15-1.

Bethke, Dominique DiManna, Samantha Schoen, and Maddie London each tallied a hit in the game.

Alex Wiley (3-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 2.1 innings. She struck out two.

The Green and Gold will play another doubleheader against Colorado Mesa on Sunday, March 31. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
