SB: London and DiManna homer, Yellow Jackets fall to Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (22-21, 18-13 RMAC) in three games on Sunday. UCCS won the first game, a continuation from Saturday, 7-1, before BHSU (10-22, 7-18 RMAC) fell, 12-3, in game three, and 3-0 in the final game of the series.

UCCS 7, BHSU 1

The second game of the series began on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the game was suspended because of weather.

The two teams resumed the game on Sunday morning in the top of the second. UCCS added a run in the top of the fourth, but the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the inning. Maddie London begun the inning at the plate, and crushed a home run over the center field fence to cut the lead to 3-1. However, UCCS scored three runs in the fifth inning, and one more in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Samantha Schoen got on base with a one-out double, but the Mountain Lions ultimately won the game, 7-1.

London finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer. Caitlyn Graves, Kindall Bethke, and Schoen each tallied one hit.

Breanne Henricksen (0-4) took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Darian Gottfried threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run (zero earned).

UCCS 12, BHSU 3 (5 innings)

In the second game of the day, the Mountain Lions took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Green and Gold took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second. Dominique DiManna led off with a home run, her second of the year. Maddi Fidler then hit a double before Crystal Amaral singled. Katelyn Odle came up and hit an RBI popup, allowing Fidler to score. Amaral then came across the plate when Alex Wiley hit a double to right center.

UCCS came back in the third inning and retook the lead. The Mountain Lions scored eight runs on eight hits to lead, 10-3. They added two runs in the fifth inning to take the game.

Wiley and DiManna each had two hits in the game while also tallying an RBI. Amaral also had an RBI.

Wiley (3-10) took the loss. She threw 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned). Breanne Henricksen threw 1.3 innings, while Darian Gottfried threw the final 1.0 innings.

UCCS 3, BHSU 0

In the third game of the day and fourth of the series, UCCS jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single by Rayle Glover. The team would add two runs in the sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets got at least one runner on in five innings, but they were unable to plate a run.

Graves, Bethke, DiManna, and Odle each tallied a hit in the game.

Amaral (7-7) took the complete game loss. She allowed three runs (one earned) in 7.0 innings, striking out eight.

The Green and Gold are next scheduled to host CCU in a four-game series April 19-20 for senior and family weekend.
