GOLDEN, Colo. – A blustery day at the Colorado School of Mines didn't stop Black Hills State University track and field from posting some top ten all time marks this past weekend at the Kit Mayer Invite. The Yellow Jackets also picked up three wins from junior Jake Iverson in the steeple chase, freshman
Kyla Sawvell in the shot put, and senior
Alexandra Richards in the javelin.
"With only one meet until conference, we have some individuals who are poised to contend," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "This past weekend also showed us some areas to focus on as we gear up for the championships."
Competition began Saturday night and senior Nate Fredrick set the tone early. He posted a second place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:15.67. Senior
Savannah Davis would match that shortly after in the 10,000 meters, also taking second place. In the field, Richards won the javelin in 124' 6.00" and remains third in the RMAC in that event.
Action resumed Sunday morning on the track with the steeple chase. The Yellow Jackets went 1-2-3 with Iverson picking up the win, senior
Jonah Theisen close behind in second, and sophomore
Keith Osowski taking third. Theisen and Iverson remain in the top 25 in the nation in this event.
In the sprints, junior
Tristan Hepp took second in the 400m dash with a time of 48.81. That moves him up to number six all time in school history. In the 400m hurdles, sophomore
Seth Hills took third with a time of 56.51.
Sophomore
Allan McDonnell again cleared the provisional mark of 6' 8.75" to take second on misses in the high jump. He remains in a 14-way tie for 20
th in the nation.
The women's throw squad continued to impress this weekend. Besides winning the shot put with a toss of 44' 10.5", Sawvell picked up third place in the discus. Meanwhile, junior
Danielle Noble took second in the discus and improved her number nine all time mark.
In the pole vault, sophomore
Hannah Hendrick cleared 12' 00.75" to take third and tie herself for fifth all time in school history.
On the track, senior
Tori Moore gutted her way to a third place finish in the steeple chase, while senior
Cailey Roth was just shy of her personal best in the 800m to take second place with a time of 2:16.85.
Senior
Shayna Soderstrom had an impressive day in the sprints. Her 100m time moved her to eighth all time and her 200m time of 25.13 moved her to number three all time. She also split an unofficial 57 second 400m in the 4x400m relay. She along with Roth, Julette Gohring, and
Zoe Langseth, finished in third place with a time of 4:03.74.
The Yellow Jackets are slated for a busy week. A contingency of athletics will be traveling to California to compete on Thursday and Friday while the rest of the team will be heading to Dickinson State for the Blue Hawk Invite this Friday.
