SPEARFISH, S.D. – Hosted relatively early compared to many conference championships across the country, the RMAC Championships are set to be held at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D. this weekend. Some off the best athletes in the country will be coming to compete in this three-day championship and FloTrack, the premier track streaming service, will be live broadcasting the meet. "Conference championships are always special," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "The energy levels and excitement are off the charts. We are looking forward to compete against some of the best schools in the nation."
The multi events kick off on Friday with women's heptathlon at 11 a.m. The men's decathlon will follow at 11:25 a.m. On Saturday, the men's javelin throw will start day two at 8:30 a.m. Action on the track begins at 11:05 a.m. with the 4x100m relay prelims. On the third and final day of the championships, women's javelin will be thrown at 8:30, while track events start at 12:30 p.m.
Senior
Ryan Olsen will be the only multi athlete competing for BHSU on Friday. He enters the decathlon ranked fifth.
Nationally, the Green and Gold enter the weekend with multiple athletes on the national lists having hit provisionally qualifying marks or times. Senior
Jonah Theisen's steeple chase time is eighth in the nation and third in the conference after running close to nine minutes flat a week ago. Junior
Tristan Hepp is 19
th in the 400m hurdles and enters conference second in that event. Sophomore
Allan McDonnell is tied for 21
st in the nation and enters the RMAC meet with the number one mark. In the pole vault, freshman
Hannah Hendrick in 36
th, while sophomores
Whitney Scott and
Jordyn Huneke are tied for 42
nd. Those marks translate to fourth and fifth in the conference.
Bursting onto the scene in the javelin in his collegiate track and field debut last week was junior
Makaleb McInnis. His javelin throw is 25
th in the nation and leads the RMAC.
Freshman
Kyla Sawvell will be the field athlete to watch heading into the conference meet. Â Sawvell is on the list in two events and is 40
th in the discus and 44
th in the shot put. At the conference level she is second in both the hammer throw and discus and first in the shot. She has the potential to take the triple crown.
The Yellow Jackets are poised to place more on the national lists this weekend as many athletes enter the meet in the top ten.
On the track, senior
Shayna Soderstrom is sixth in the 100m and ninth in the 200m. In the 400m, juniors
Tristan Hepp and
Taylor Hepp are eighth and tenth, respectively. Junior
Jordan Theisen is sixth in the 800m while senior
Levi Fried is seventh. Junior
Brittney Marosok is eighth in the 100m hurdles while junior
Seth Kovar is fifth in the 110m hurdles. Sophomore
Seth Hills joins Hepp on the conference list in the 400m hurdles sitting at fifth. Behind
Jonah Theisen in the steeplechase is junior Jake Iverson and sophomore
Keith Osowski at seventh and ninth, respectively. Iverson's steeple is just outside of provisionally qualifying range and is currently 26
th in the nation. Senior
Tori Moore will enter her steeplechase race ranked fifth.
In the field, behind McDonnell in the high jump is
Tristan Hepp at fourth and sophomore Drazen Moratkza at eighth. Senior
Alexandra Richards is also fourth in the high jump, third in the javelin, and 13
th in the pole vault. Sophomore
JoJo Sherman cracked the top 10 in the pole vault as well. McDonnell makes another appearance in the triple jump at eighth while junior
Kathrine Campbell is tenth in that event.
After this weekend, the Yellow Jackets will participate in several last chance meets, including the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, as they turn their attention to the National Championships.
