RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills State University track and field teams wrapped up the RMAC Championships today in style on Sunday. The women's squad posted their second highest ever finish taking fifth with 71.50 points. The men's squad tied their highest ever finish of sixth place and scored a program high 73 points.
"It was a solid three days of competition," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "There was a spark in the team that showed some strong desire and an incredible level of competitiveness. It was a fun atmosphere to be in."
The Yellow Jackets has a quite the field day, pun intended. Kyla Savwell added two more second places to her weekend in the shot put and discus toss. Her shot put throw moved her into fifth all time in school history.
Danielle Noble just missed the podium in the discus taking fourth place.
Alexandra Richards also had a busy day and her efforts paid off with a fourth place finish in the javelin throw and a fifth place finish in the high jump.
The Green and Gold again flexed their depth in the pole vault, taking three of the five scoring positions.
Hannah Hendrick vaulted over 12 feet to take second, and move herself to top five all-time in school history, and jump to 39
th in the nation. Her teammates
Jordyn Huneke and
Whitney Scott tied for fifth and seventh, respectively.
Hoyt Nicholas managed to squeeze in two points in the discus with his seventh place finish. More points were picked up in the high jump after
Allan McDonnell made the podium in third place and
Drazen Moratzka took sixth.
Action was no less exciting on the track. The 4x100 meter relay got underway first and the team of
Seth Hills,
Taylor Hepp,
Brian Kjerstad, and
Tristan Hepp took eighth.
Julette Goehring,
Shayna Soderstrom,
Brittney Marosok, and
Breanne Fuller had an impressive showing in their 4x100 relay taking fourth place.
Jordan Theisen put together an impressive double today in the 1500m and 800m. Lining up against two of the top competitors in the country, he was able to take third and make the podium in the 1500m. An hour later, he grinded his way to sixth place in the 800m.
Shortly after,
Cailey Roth and Ericka Dystra would put it all on the line for their 800m race. Roth, who took the lead when no one else would, was run down by the defending national champion in the homestretch, but still earned herself a podium spot with her third place finish. Dykstra, who shook things up in the race, finished in eighth.
The Seths each had a great showing in the hurdles.
Seth Kovar took sixth in the 110m hurdles while
Seth Hills took sixth in the 400m hurdles.
Elsewhere in the sprints,
Taylor Hepp and
Garrett Snook finished neck-and-neck in the 400, taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
Brian Kjerstad took seventh in the 200m dash, while Shanya Soderstrom finished in eighth in the 100m dash.
In the last distance event,
Tori Moore doubled back from the steeplechase and ran an impressive last 800m in her 5000m race to squeeze out a point with her eighth place finish.
Wrapping up the day, Kjerstad, Snook,
Taylor Hepp, and
Levi Fried ran to sixth place in the 4x400 relay, while
Zoe Langseth, Roth, Dykstra, and Soderstrom fought through their exhaustion to finish seventh.
Colorado School of Mines won the men's team championship with 162.50 points, while the UCCS women scored 161 points to win.
The Yellow Jackets will now turn their efforts to qualifying individuals for the national championship. Currently, Jonah Thesien is the only automatic qualifier in the steeplechase and has punched his ticket. The squads will be back in action next weekend at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D.
