Colorado Springs, CO – The Black Hills State University track and field teams had a stand out day at day one of the RMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women's squad will enter day two in 4
th place with 25 points with multiple athletes to compete in finals. The Men are currently in eighth with 7 points and have a lot of opportunities for points tomorrow.
"The team did great today and matched the intensity of the building," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "We have plenty of opportunities to add to our point totals tomorrow and are looking for another record breaking day."
After last years third place finish in the weight throw,
Kyla Sawvell walked into the ring with unsettled business. Her first toss was 18.09 meters which ended up all she needed to garner the RMAC title. She won by over a meter and a half. Madi Fidler followed up with a toss of 16.57m to earn herself a spot on the podium in third place.
The throwers kept seeing success on the day as
Hoyt Nicholas tossed 16.95 meters in the men's weight to make the podium in third place.
Adding more points in the field events was
Whitney Scott in the pole vault. she cleared 3.75 meters to podium in third place.
Hannah Hendrick just missed scoring, taking ninth on misses.
Not to be out done on the track, the sprinters set some new school records in the prelims building momentum heading into tomorrows finals.
Breanne Fuller qualified for finals in the 60m dash after breaking her own school record running a time of 7.76 seconds. She would follow up that performance qualifying for finals in the 200m dash.
In the 400m,
Zoe Langseth ran the second fastest time in prelims to qualify for finals.
Scoring some points in the Distance Medley relay was
Ruby Lindquist,
Taylor Lundquist,
Mayson Hudyma, and
Xiomara Robinson. They took sixth in 12:49.46.
Seth Kovar reclaimed his school record in the 60m hurdles running the second fast prelim time of 8.23. Both he and
Tristan Hepp qualified for tomorrows finals. In the 400m, both
Taylor Hepp and
Tucker Bopp have a spot in tomorrow's final.
In the multis, after four events,
Tristan Hepp sits in fourth place with 2902 points heading into tomorrow's final three events. He won the 60m dash in 7.17 seconds, and also won the high jump clearing 1.99m meters. The gap between Hepp and first place is a mere 64 points. Hepp will have ample opportunity to close that gap tomorrow as he opens the day with the 60m hurdles.
Day two of the RMAC Championships gets under Saturday at 10:00am with the multi events, the men's shot put gets the field events underway at 11:00am, and running events begin at noon with the 60m hurdles.
