SB: Hubbard walk-off homer propels BHSU to victory, Yellow Jackets split DH with Adams State

The Black Hills State University softball team split the first two games of a four-game weekend series on Saturday versus RMAC foe Adams State.

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team split the first two games of a four-game weekend series on Saturday versus RMAC foe Adams State. The Yellow Jackets (3-14, 2-8 RMAC) lost to Adams State (3-13, 1-8 RMAC), 6-1 in the first game before securing a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the second game of the day by a final score of 9-7.

Jade Garbiso started the scoring for Adams State in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run single. The Grizzlies scored one more run in the top of the third when an RBI from Shelby Haskins gave them a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Adams State distanced themselves further from the Green and Gold when a Sydney Muniz double drove in two runs and a Yellow Jacket error allowed another run to score, giving the Grizzlies a 6-0 advantage.
 
The Green and Gold got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Baileigh Hubbard singled down the left field line to drive in one run. However, that would be the final run to cross home plate for either team as Adams State earned a 6-1 victory.
 
Hubbard was 1-for-1 in the game and drove in one RBI while Gianna Haley (1-for-3) had one double for the Yellow Jackets. Taryn Moan and Brittany Henricksen also recorded one hit each.
 
Crystal Amaral (1-6) struck out two batters in the loss and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Halie Litwin pitched 3.0 innings and also gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits. Emily Marsden pitched the final 1.0 inning for the Yellow Jackets, allowing zero runs on one hit.

Adams State jumped on top of the Yellow Jackets early in second game of the day with three runs in the top of the first inning. Samantha McDonald led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, and another home run by Shelby Haskins drove in two more runs to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead. Adams State added to their lead in the top of the third when a Maya Ramos-Moreno single drove in one more run, giving them a 4-0 advantage.
 
The Yellow Jackets were unable to generate any runs in the first four innings and allowed Adams State to pull ahead even further in the top of the fifth when Ramos-Moreno tripled to drive in two more runs for the Grizzlies. Trailing 6-0, the Green and Gold scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a Dominique DiManna home run to left field.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Darian Gottfried relieved Breanne Henricksen in the circle for the Yellow Jackets and proceeded to limit the Adams State offense over the final two innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Baileigh Hubbard drove in one run for the Green and Gold with a single to left field. Caitlyn Graves doubled up the middle to drive in another run for the Yellow Jackets, who trailed 6-3 after six innings.
 
Adams State added another run in the top of the seventh as the result of an error. The Grizzlies would proceed to load the bases with only one out, but a fielder's choice allowed the Yellow Jackets to gain the second out of the inning at home base. The next batter grounded out, ending the scoring threat for Adams State and setting the stage for a Green and Gold comeback.
 
DiManna doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the Yellow Jackets. An Emily Marsden single and Taryn Moan walk loaded the bases for Gianna Haley who tripled down the right field line and drove in three runs, cutting the Adams State lead to 7-6. Maddie London then hit an RBI single to center field to tie the game. Next, Hubbard stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to end the game in walk-off fashion and give the Yellow Jackets a 9-7 victory.
 
Hubbard went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one home run, and DiManna (2-for-3) had one RBI with a double and a home run. Haley (2-for-4) had three RBIs and one triple. London and Graves each had one RBI apiece for the Yellow Jackets who pounded out eleven hits in the game.
 
Gottfried (1-1) picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets. The junior pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game in relief, giving up one unearned run on two hits with one strike out. Henricksen started the game in the circle for the Green and Gold, giving up six earned runs on six hits while striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.
 
The Yellow Jackets will look to carry the momentum from today's win into tomorrow as they wrap up their weekend series in Alamosa with rematches versus Adams State on March 8. Sunday's games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
