Yellow Jackets Fall to Mavericks in Competitive Outing

The Yellow Jackets women's basketball team fell to 6-2 in the RMAC after being defeated by the Colorado Mesa Mavericks Saturday night in a game highlighted by stellar defense from both teams.
 
Going into the game both teams boasted an impressive one loss record sitting at 6-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks were able to control game tempo for much of the night after a strong second quarter which saw them go up 8 points over the Yellow Jackets before heading into the half. The Mavericks would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the contest.
 
In the third quarter the Yellow Jackets would outscore the Mavericks 20-17 cutting the lead to five and creating a very competitive atmosphere for the 4th quarter. A total of 20 points were scored between both teams in the fourth quarter as defense was stout in a fight to the finish. The Mavericks would outscore the Yellow Jackets 11-9 keeping the lead and securing the win.
 
The Yellow Jackets had three double digit scorers on the night including Racquel Wientjes (14), Danica Kocer (10), and Morgan Ham (10). Wientjes led the team in boards with 7 total boards pulled down with Megan Engesser close behind pulling down 5 of her own. Engesser also led the team in steals sneaking the ball away from the Mavericks 2 times on the night.
 
As a team the Yellow Jackets shot 35.1% (20-of-57) from the field and 34.6% (9-of-26) from beyond the arc on the night. The team struggled at the free throw line with their lowest free throw percentage of 69.2% (9-of-13) at the charity stripe. Morgan Ham was the only Yellow Jacket that made 2 or more free throws on the night.

The Yellow Jackets will be playing at home next Saturday, January, 16th at 5:30 P.M. when they are set to take on Western Colorado where they will look to avenge their first loss of the season.
