Black Hills State football is hosting the 136th Black Hills Brawl this Saturday, Oct. 30, taking on South Dakota Mines at 1 p.m. from Lyle Hare Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (4-4, 2-4 RMAC) will look to get back in the win column against the rival Hardrockers (4-4, 2-4 RMAC).
History of the Black Hills Brawl
This is the 136th edition of the historic rivalry game between Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines, known as the Black Hills Brawl - Battle for the Homestake trophy.
The deceptively heavy Homestake Trophy introduced in 1946, takes its name from the Homestake Mine located in Lead, S.D., the largest mine in the Western Hemisphere.
Measuring over 8,000 feet (1.5 miles) deep, and 0.5 miles across at its surface, the Homestake Mine produced more than 41 million ounces of gold and 9 million ounces of silver before closing in 2002.
The trophy has resided in Rapid City with South Dakota Mines over the last year after the Hardrockers won last season's matchup on Oct. 10, 34-17.
This will be the 136th Black Hills Brawl, continuing one of the longest running NCAA rivalry games in the nation.
Currently at 135 games played, the Black Hills Brawl is the most played rivalry series at the NCAA DII level, and fourth-most in any division nationwide behind only Lafayette vs. Lehigh (156 games), Yale vs. Princeton (142) and Yale vs. Harvard (136).
BHSU is 60-64-11 all-time in the series, first playing in 1900, but hold a 27-11 advantage over the Hardrockers since 1987.
Last Time Out
Black Hills State football fell to New Mexico Highlands last Saturday, 24-10 at Lyle Hare Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets totaled 362 yards of total offense, 179 rushing and 183 passing.
Hasaan Williams hauled in his third touchdown of the season, scoring on a 42-yard reception. He totaled 60 yards on four catches in the game.
Zechariah Rodriguez-Brown had his first career interception in the second quarter, picking off a pass in the endzone and returning it 42 yards.
Matthew Collier had his fifth 100+ yard game of the season, totaling 111 yards on 15 attempts.
South Dakota Mines
Like the Yellow Jackets, the Hardrockers also hold a 4-4 overall and 2-4 RMAC record. After earning two non-conference wins to open the season, SDSMT has also defeated Adams State (45-42) and Fort Lewis (42-7). Since those wins, the Hardrockers have dropped their last two games to Colorado Mines and Western Colorado.
