Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Defeat Mountain Lions, 65-61

Black Hills State women's basketball stays undefeated at home after taking down UCCS, 65-61.

The Yellow Jackets (6-6, 4-2 RMAC) had three double digit scorers again with Ashlee Beacom leading the way recording 18 points. Danica Kocer tallied 14 points while Megan Engesser totaled 12 on the night.

Defensively Ashley Davis led the team with six rebounds.

Both teams were slow to start before UCCS struck first and took a 7-2 lead midway through the first. Threes from Beacom and Engesser would put BHSU ahead shortly after as the Yellow Jackets would lead 14-8 with four minutes left in the quarter, and eventually take a 20-15 lead into the second.

UCCS came back to re-take the lead early on in the second quarter, but not for long as a Beacom layup and 3-pointer helped BHSU regain the lead 29-25. The teams traded points the rest of the half, however; it was the Yellow Jackets who held a 32-29 advantage into halftime.

Out of the break, BHSU was able to build on their lead, eventually using a 10-0 run, capped by a Hammerbeck three, to extend to a 51-35 lead at 3:56 in the third. The Mountain Lions would get a few back in the closing minutes of the period to make it 51-41 going into the fourth.

Back-and-forth play continued, but UCCS wouldn't quit as they clawed back to within six (55-49) midway through the fourth. The Yellow Jacket lead dropped to 59-58 with 28 seconds remaining, but the team would hang on, making their free throws down the stretch to seal the 65-61 victory.

As a team the Yellow Jackets were 36.5% from the field making 19 of 52 attempts. From beyond the arc BHSU tallied a 37.9 shooting percentage making 11 of 29 shots from downtown.

The Yellow Jackets were clean from the charity stripe shooting 80% making 16 of 20 free throws.
